HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING

HOKITIKA, July 25. The Hokitika Borough Council met last, evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. G. Heinz, E. L. Park, E. Teichelman, A. Thompson, 11. L. Michel, H. T. Parry, T. W. Duff, J. King. An apology was received from Or. Elcock. The Returned Soldiers’ Association, Hokitika, wrote expressing an appreciation of the Council’s prompt action in renovating the South African War Memorial. The N.Z. Refrigerating Co., advised that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika, during flie month of June, 1936, viz:—l36 sheep, 2 lambs. M.0.H., Christchurch, wrote pointing out that the Sanitary Inspector visits the Borough on an average of times per week at an annual cost to the Borough of £27/10/-, and that the actual cost to the Department, excluding meals, is £9O/2/6, and asking that as the Borough is well and cheaply served, mat its contribution be increased to £9O per annum. —Estimate accepted. Miss J. Devaney, applied for permission to run a small drainage pipe from bar sink to street channel. — Granted. W. Burgess applied for permission to erect a motor sign outside the firm’s garage, Revell Street. —Approved, subject to Inspector’s approval.

D. Stevenson applied for permission to erect a verandah on posts in front of studio, Hamilton Street. —Granted. The Manager, Associated Motorists Petrol Co., applied for a water connection to garage, Revell St., internal diameter of pipe 11”, in order to com-

ply with the Dangerous Goods Regulations, in regard to installing a sprinkler system for inside petrol pumps, and asking what the Council’s charge would be. —Approved at their cost.

The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote asking that the Mayor of the old Provincial Capital of Westland convene at as early a date as possible a conference for the purpose of setting up a Provincial Centennial Council for Westland, so that Westland will be in a position to fittingly take its part in the Celebrations of 1940. —Left to Mayor to act. The Town Clerk, Petone, advising

that the Council had passed the following resolution, “That the incidence of the costs of Hospital Board Administration should be reviewed as an urgent matter, in the direction of relieving ratepayers from part or the whole of the burden arising from such costs and that the Municipal Association be urged to make representations on the matter to the Government,” and asking all Councils who are feeling the burden of Hospital levies to support the resolution. — Decided to support the resolution. The Secretary, Westland Hospital Board, notified that the Council’s proportion of the levy payable for 19361937 under the Hospitals and Charitable Institutions Act, 1936, has been fixed at £1133/15/2, payable in nine equal instalments of £126/19/5, the first of such instalments being due on the 31st of May. 1936, and forwarding a Statement of Estimates.

Messrs Moore and Duncan, Hokitika, applied to erect overhanging verandah on Mr. Cuttance’s property in Revell Street.—Granted.

Professor Campbell wrote notifying Council his services would be available with regard to water scheme. — It was decided to get levels taken of proposed new route and to write to Employment Board re subsidy on work.

The Refrigerating Company wrote re offal contract, notifying its intention not to renew contract, after July 31. Later the Company agreed to extend contract to August 31. —-Decided Company to make a definite offer. 'rhe Foreman’s Report was read and approved. The manager of the Abattoirs reported on installation of electric light in buildings. It was decided to levy a special rate of 2 7-S pence in the pound to be recurrent for ’3O until loan is paid off.

The Finance Report showed: Expenditure £982/1/4, receipts £1235 9/9; Dd. balance Dist. Fund A/c. £441 0/9. Accounts amounting to £llOl 1/8 were passed -or payment. The Abattoir report stated: Stock slaughtered during month: 64 bullocks, 33 cows, 38 calves, 25 heifers, 11 pigs, 208 sheep, 36 lambs. Condemned: 1 cow, 1 calf. Fees collected for month £7l/16/6. Fees for corresponding month last year £73/14/6.
