24-MILE BEAM LIGHTHOUSE S. AFRICA’S LARGEST BEACON CAPETOWN, May 27. South Africa’s largest lighthouse will be brought, into operation on Oct, 1 this year, after two years’ work. It is built at Cape Columbine, Cape Province, and will have a strength of 9,500,000 candle-opwer. This is more than three times as powerful as the Durban Bluff Light, which at present is the most brilliant in the country . The Durban light is the same as the Lizard in Epgland—3,ooo.ooo candlei power. 1 The Cape Columbine light will be visible for 24 miles. It will make navigation safe on a. coast, which has, for generations, been feared by sailors. Cost of installation was about £16,000, Flashes will he one beam of light] every 15 seconds.
