Mesdames J. Hutchinson and R. Duggan will leave, to-morrow, for Dunedin, to attend the conference of the Women’s Institute.

Mr M. F. F. Gembitsky, of Christchurch. arrived yesterday, to relieve as Train Running Officer, at Greymouth.

Mr. E: C. Huie will shortly leave for England via America to take up his duties as resident London representative of the Press Company.

Mr R. E. Keown who has been an inmate of the Oramii Hospital, has recovered sufficiently to leave that institution and is the guest of Mr and Mrs F. Stewart., Karoro.

Mr. A. A. Adams, one of the South Island Rugby selectors, left to-day, for Nelson, to witness the interprovincial match, Nelson v. Golden Bay— Motueka. to-morrow.

Mr A. J. Dickson has been appointed assistant engineer to the Auckland City Council. Mr Dickson, who is only 32 years of age has been designing engineer to the council since 1931.

A London cablegram stated that Mr. A. R. F. Mac Kay, New Zealand House Finance Officer, has been awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy, London, for his thesis on New Zealand public finance.

Mr M. C. Smith, of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, Greymouth, has received notice of transfer to Christchurch, where he is to commence duty on August 10. He will be succeeded at Greymouth by Mr W. D. McLeod, of Mosgiel.

The death occurred at Woolston, on Monday last of Edward Smith, aged 82 years. Deceased had been in New Zealand for 57 years, and resided on the West Coast for many years. He came to the opening of the Westport mine, and resided for some years at Brunner. For the past 25 years, he had resided in Christchurch.

The Admiralty announces that Admiral Sir Herbert Meade-Fetherston-haugh has been placed on the retired list at his own request, and that ViceAdmiral Sir George Chetwode in consequence is promoted to Admiral, RearAdmiral A. B. Cunningham to ViceAdmiral, and Captain Elliott to RearAdmiral. The last-mentioned has been placed on the retired list, and in consequence Captain B. C. Watson is promoted to Rear-Admiral. Sir Archibald Carter has been appointed permanent secretary to the Admiralty in succession to the late Sir Oswyn Murray.—Official Wireless.

Mr A. J. Baker has been promoted to be Assistant-engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, in succession to Mr Wood, who was appointed Engineer-in-chief. Mr Baker joined the Department as 'an engineering cadet in 1904. In 1911, he carried out the location of the eastern end of the Stratford Main Trunk; in 1914, he was placed in charge as resident engineer of the newlycreated Taiimarunui Public Works district: in 1919, he was. District Engineer in Otago: 1920, in charge of the Auckland District: 1924, transferred, to Head Office as Inspecting Engineer, till this year, when he became Acting-assistant-engineer-inrchief. He is a member of the Highways Board. —Press Assn.

The death, at Vancouver, is announced of Mr J. C. Irons, general manager of the Canadian Australian Line, Ltd. Born in Wellington, he joined the Union Steam Ship Company as a. junior in the Napier office in 1895. In 1906, he was sent from New Zealand to Vancouver as general agent for the Union Steam Ship Company, and was appointed general manager of the Canadian-Australian Linb on its formation in 1931. He represented Hawke’s Bay, Canterbury, and Auckland in provincial Rugby, (stated a Press Association telegram). The flags on the Union Company’s building in Greymouth, and on the vessel in port, are being flown at halfmast, as a mark of respect.
