ALL BLACKS

WELLINGTON. July 22

After playing the Australians in the first test match at Wellington on September 5, the All Black team will be kept together for the second match at Dunedin on September 12. The New Zealand Rugby Union to-night decided that the team should play a game against South Canterbury at Timaru on September 9 on its way to Dunedin. SEDDON SHIELD REFEREES. At this week’s meeting of the Nelson Rugby Union on Monday (says the “Mail”), the -'secretary of the Nelson Referees’ Association wrote asking that as the rules of the Seddon Shield did not provide for a referee from the Shield districts, the Nelson Union take up the matter to give effect to the proposal. Mr. Richardson suggested that the matter be discussed at a conference of delegates from the Shield unions. The motion was seconded by Mr. Ta niters ley. Mr. Silcock said he did not think the matter was important enough for the expense of a special conference. He suggested that it bo discussed by delegates at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union. Mr. Richardson agreed with the proposal of Mr. Silcock.

Mr. Silcock moved that at a reasonable time prior to Nelson’s Shield challenge that Nelson make representations to the holders for a referee from the Shield area. Mr Merritt said he did not like the proposal. He would favour its discussion at the annual meeting. He did not think the unions would ever agree on the matter. Mr. Davy considered the Nelson referees were as good as some he had seen control Shield matches. The president, pointed out that the Nelson Union hud sent to the New Zealand Union the names of three referees considered capable to referee any representative game in the Dominion, and when it came to them refereeing a Shield game there appealed to be no objections. Air. McPherson said he was opposed to the proposal altogether. The public in the various centres would not appreciate the refereeing of referees in the districts concerned and it was the public the unions had to look to for support. The motion was carried, Messrs. McPherson and Richardson having their votes recorded against.
