HOKITIKA, July 23
A party' from the Westland County Council (Mr. D. J. Evans, clerk), Mr. J. J. McKay (chairman) and Jas. Donovan (member), left by air yesterday for the Haast. where they join a party of 15 from Otago who are "spying out the land" in connection with proposed routes from Westland to Otago. The party from Otago are said to favour the Haast route while the Westland County Council support the Hollyford route. The party’ will return to-morrow.
The Hokitika School Commitdt.ee has sent a letter of congratulation to Mr. Bignell on his being again elected to the Canterbury Education Board.
The annual ball of St. Mary’s Debating Club was held last evening, there being a large number present. Dancing was preceded by a juvenile gathering, when an entertainment given by them was “pul on the air." The Anglican new church is rapidly nearing completion. It should be out of the contractor’s hands early in August. A large number of men are engaged in the preparatory work in connection with the building of the new bridge over the Hokitika river at Kanieri.
