LEAGUE FOOTBALL

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

At the weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the West Coast Rugby League, last evening, there were present, Messrs A. 11. MeKane (Chairman), W. Barlow, A. A\yle, J. Stokes, B. Rathbun, J. Anisy and R. J. Harrington (secretary). The Wellington League wrote asking if the West Coast League would consider playing a match at Wellington for the Northern Union Cup. The letter stated that, as the game was gradually being put on its feet in Wellington, such a match would be a big help.

The Chairman said that it was a matter meriting consideration, although he did not know why Wellington could not have invited them without the Cup. The West Coast had brought it down from the North Island, and back from Christchurch, and it did not seem fair that they should travel with it.. However, he was certainly in favour of a game in Wellington, but not for the Cup. Mr. Hunter agreed that it would not be fair to expect the game to be for the Cup. If the West Coast had held it for a long time it might be different, but as it was they expected other provinces to visit the West Coast in search of it. Otherwise, he was in favour of a game in Wellington.

The chairman said that it would not be fair to the local spectators to take the Cup to Wellington. It was not that he was afraid of- losing it — he was sure that the West Coast would hold their own, but he did not think they would find anyone so generous as to travel down here with it. Mr. Stokes moved that the Wellington League be advised that tnc game in Wellington would be considered, but not for the Northern Union Cup. and that they be asked to suggest a date, and give an estimate of the likely gate.

The motion was seconded by the Chairman, and carried. The junior Knock-out competition was closed, and Marist declared winners.

Accounts amounting to £47/18/7 were passed for payment. The Hornby Club (Christchurch), forwarded a challenge for the Thacker Shield.

The challenge was accepted, and it was decided to inform Hornby that the local knock-out would be finalised in time for the match to be played during the first week-end in September. The Inangahua Sub-Centre requested that they should be provided with further supplies of tickets for the excursion to Christchurch, on August 1.
