jyjANY speeches have been made by Mr. Savage since he became Prime Minister, and none has been wiser Ilian one of his statements yesterday. “We will have to ease off for the remainder

of the session so far as legislation is concerned and take particular notice of the effect of the legislation we have passed.” he remarked. “And then to give evidence of

our ability to correct mistakes and he big enough to admit that we have made mistakes and correct them wherever they appear.” Even the wisest make mistakes; it is the foolish who persevere with errors. Mr. Savage is to bo commended for showing courage at

this juncture, and determination to hasten slowly in future legislative proposals. Labour legislation was launched with the best of intentions, but ton much was attempted in too short a time, with the consequence that Labour is itself aghast at some of the effects. For example, reducing hours and raising wages simul-

taneously, was an obvious mistake, and to claim that no price-raising would be necessary through this policy, was absurd. To-day, prices are rising all round, and the Government despite previous warnings and threats, can do nothing but appoint a tribunal to deal with protests, or to agree to the higher barges.
