NUDE ATHLETE
AUCKLAND STATUE DISPUTE
[per press association.]
AUCKLAND, July 20.
The nude statue of an athlete erected at the entrance to the Auckland Domain. which has been the subject of considerable controversy, was approved by the Parks Committee of the City Council before the work of the building of the gates was commenced, according to a report submitted to the Council, by a committee, to-night.
The Committee also indicated that it did not propose to take any further action.
A proposal that the statue should be altered “to conform to public good taste,” was defeated by 14 votes to five on a division. In a long discussion, Mr. H. P. Burton advocated the modification of the statue on the grounds of its possible effect on the youth of the community. He said that the general attitude of the man-in-the-street had been to make a jest of the statue, and not one per cent, of the public was artistically minded. There was no question of .the quality of the sculpture. It was excellent, but he considered the statue was wholly unnecessary in its existing form.
