COOK ISLANDS DELEGATION

FRUIT INDUSTRY INVESTIGATED

RAROTONGA, July 19

Members of the parliamentary delegation have spent a busy week. On Tuesday they met all parties interested in the fruit industry at Avarua. Mr J. Robertson, M.P.. the chairman, Mr S. G. Holland, M.P., and Mr C. L. Hunter, M.P., outlined the course proposed and asked for the cooperation of all concerned. The delegation is visiting plantations and obtaining a thorough acquaintance with the conditions under which the fruit is produced and handled. Members are receiving the fullest European ami native co-operation.

On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday the delegation visited plantations, some in the interior involving heavy tramping and horseback rides. A luncheon was given by the growers in each district. To-morrow, and on Tuesday and Wednesday, the delegation will inspect more plantations, and will lake evidence on Thursday at Avarua. The delegation was greatly impressed by the display of 500 pupils of the Avarua School, and was also impressed by the industry of the natives. The goodwill and hospitality have been overwhelming.

The Commissioner, Judge 11. F. Ayson, and Mr S. J. Smith, secretary for the Cook Islands, have been of great assistance, and their knowledge has been invaluable.

SAMOAN MISSION

The Ministerial party spent the week-end inspecting the land which lias been chosen for development purposes and prospective settlement for a number of Samoan residents, who are desirous of acquiring holdings. A visit was also paid to the Vaimea prison.

To-day is being devoted to a confer ence with the Samoan reprpsenta lives.
