“In my opinion the slang word ‘Soo cer’ used by the Press and the broad-

casting announcers is undignified and derogatory to the game,” wrote Mr. L. E. Finch, of Hfiwera, .in a letter read at the meeting of the council of the New Zealand Football Association. “There must be many newspaper readers and radio listeners who fail to connect Soccer with football at all, and many young people are thus trained in ignorance. I feel very strongly that this is a matter that should he taken up with vigour by all associations.” Enclosed was a copy of a letter sent by Mr. Finch to 2YA in which he complained of. the use of the word Soccer. He was aware that in New Zealand the term was in common usage, but nevertheless it was “nothing but schoolboy sldng.” Surely the game was worthy of its proper name from the Press and announcers, he thought. A member of the council, Mr. W. G. Bryce, paid that he had never heard the word "Soccer” until he came to NeW, Zealand, but according to another, member, Mi< H. H. A. Renal, the word originated at Oxford or Cambridge.
