Mishap to Monastic: Monastic met with ; a slight mishap last week and has been listed as a doubtful starter at Trentham.

A Change of Stables: Arctic Star and Redolent are now members of S. Barr’s stable at Riccarton.

Lycldas Joins Hogan’s Stable: Lycidas has been sold to Mr D. J. Finnegan, the owner of Braw Lad, and has joined P. T. Hogan s stable.

Cuddle Shipped: R. J. Murphy’s champion, Cuddle, was shipped to Sydney yesterday, .by the Wanganella. in view of the Spring pacing.

Theo Retired: Theo, winner of the Victorian Derby and the A.J.C. Derby in 1934, has been retired from the turf, and will go to the Kingsfield stud. This son of Limond (defunct) had been off the scene for some time. He was given a trial in the June Stakes at the A.J.C. Winter meeting, on Saturday last, but came in lame.

Kingan’s Team for Trentham: The Omoto trainer, E. Kingan, will leave on Saturday morning, for Wellington with Metal Bird, Copyist, Carlex, and Baffle. Metal Bird is engaged in the Whyte Handicap, on the first day, Tuesday, and the remainder will race on the second and' third days. Arrowrose was nominated for the Trentham meeting, but has gone sore, and will not make the trip.

A Japanese Idea: Japan’s only woman jockey, Miss Sumiko Saito, has had her license withdrawn because, according to the Department of Agriculture, “the mixing of the sexes on the racecourse will lead to undesirable results, as the male jockeys may find themselves competing, not for racing honours, but for the favours of their women rivals.”*

“We Three Meet Again”: The evergreen Billy Boy won the Great Northern Steeplechase with 10.7 by half a length from Forest Glow 9.13, with Diamond 10.3 twelve lengths away. In the Wellington Steeplechase Billy Boy goes up 101 b Forest Glow 91b and Diamond lib. The trio are among the acceptors for Trentham, and now we know “when we three meet again.”

Classic Entries: Entries for the six classic events of the Canterbury Jockey Club totalled 575, compared with 556 last year, an increase of 19. Details, with last year’s figures in parentheses, are os follow: —Welcome Stakes 83 (75), Middle Park Plate 60 (67), Champagne Stakes 102 (106), Challenge Stakes 100 (116), Derby Stakes 145 (124), Oaks Stakes 85 (68). The total received for the Auckland Racing Club’s eight events was 1059, an increase of 138 over last year’s figures. Details are:—Welcome Stakes 71 (68), Great Northern Foal Stakes 118 (104), Royal Stakes 116 (112), Great Northern Champagne Stakes 122 (113), Great Northern Guineas 163 (139), Great Northern Derby 197 (169), Great Northern Oaks 114 (81), Great Northern St. Leger 158 (135).

Top-weights: In recent years top-weights with the exception of Valpeen, have not' played a very prominent part at the finish of the Wellington Steeplechase. In fact, they have not even figured conspicuously in a place. Since Master Strowan won with 12.5 in 1918 the highest weights succesfully carried have been Coalition 11.11, Oakleigh 11.12, Oamahu 11.5 and' 11.9, Billy Boy 11.3 and 11.5, and Valpeen 11.4. Coalition was second with 10.11 and again with 11.6. Pamplona was second with 11.1 and Bon Reve 11.10, Kawini 11.1, and Make Up 11.3, are the only others since 1918 to carry over list into a place. Valpeen 11.4 was top-,weight in 'the field when he won last year, and Billy Boy 11.5 was in the post of honour when he scored in 1934, and he ran unplaced with 12.6 in 1933, when Omeo won under 9.4. Billy Boy was also top-weight in the field when he won with 11.3 in 1932, and so is accustomed to carrying a godd burden. He has also shaped with distinction in the Grand National Steeplechase under big weights, as he won with 11.13 in 1932, and was second with 11.13 and again with 11.5. This year he has 11.3 in the Wellington Steeplechase and also 11 years against him on the calendar.

Hardy .Horses: The- performances put up by Little Ruse at Tauranga, where he won two consecutive races, has caused some delving into history and .recalling of remarkable winners of the past. In 1896, Tillie won three races in one day at Ohinemurl. In the same year at Ellerslie, Mollyhawk won the two mile race over hurdles, the Farmers’ Steeplechase, and the Laoies’ Bracelet. Mollyhawk was ridden by Mr. G. Paul, who won the James Hazlett Memorial Gold Cup with Aussie. In 1898 Red Lancer was beaten by a nose by Emmeline in the Gore Cup, run over a mile and a-quarter. On the second day Red Lancer (9.1) won the G.R.C. Handicap of nine furlongs, the Welter Handicap, of seVen furlongs, with 11.6, and the Shorts Handicap, of four furlongs, with ±0.9. There was an interval of one race between each Win, which was registered on heavy going. About a month later Red Lancer was-unplaced in the Midsummer Handicap, of one mile and a-half. On the second day of the meeting he ran second to Gold Leaf in the St. Alban’s Handicap, and after an interval of two races came out again and won the Post Handicap of one mile. These efforts did not exhaust his prowess, as he then finished fourth in Starshot’s Dunedin Cup (one mile and three-quarters). On the second day Red Lancer won the Suburban Welter of one mile, and on the third day the Anniversary Handicap of one mile and a-quarter. After an interval of one race he ran third in thq Flying 1 Handicap of one mile. Red Lancer / finished the season by unplaced (performances in the Great

Easter Handicap and Great Autumn Handicap. He won eight races out 3f 18 starts. Red Lancer was got by St.’ Clair (Musket—Pulchra) from Red Ensign, by St. George—Red Rose, by Traducer. The following season as a six-year-old Red Lancer won five times out of 30 starts, including 17 misses after his final win. At Wellington he won the November Handicap on the first day of the spring meeting, and on the second day the Petone Handicap and the Hutt Spring Handicap. At the Auckland Cup meeting which followed, he was unplaced in the Railway Handicap, unplaced in the Summer Cup, on the third day he won the Glasgow Handicap and County Handicap, and on the final day finished fourth in the Newmarket Handicap. He won nve times during the next two or three seasons, and finished a strenuous career in moderate company.

RICCARTON NOTES

[special to “stab.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, July 1. There was some interesting jumping at Riccarton to-day.

Over Country: Punchestown (H. Turner) gave his usual sound display over ten steeplechase fences. He was joined after jumping two obstacles by Joppa (A. Stove), who shaped exceptionally well and finished in front of his mate over the last fence. Over Hurdles:

Strsamline (Turner) and Haeretonu (Stove) were responsible for an attractive exhibition over six hurdles, finishing the task abreast in good time. The latter seems to have come more solid than when previously tried over hurdles, and as he is partial to soft going ho may spring another surprise at Trentham. Polydora was given her first task over hurdles since she was recommissioned, and ridden by G. Ridgway jumned four obstacles in a brilliant manner. She is to have her first hurdle race at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s fixture next month. Latitude (J. Murfitt) was again schooled, and shaped promisingly. Fiord (G. Murfitt) jumped two pony hurdles twice, and was then sent over one of the bigger hurdles. He is a clever jumper, but will always be at a disadvantage owing to being on the small side.
