LOCAL AND GENERAL

The Otago Retail Fruiterers’ Association has decided to urge the Government to lift the embargo on Australian fruit, in order to make available cheap supplies which are on the Australian market.—Press Assn.

Leaving the Snow River camp, in the Takaka district, for the Anntoki hills on April 27 last, Allan Cameron, a gold prospector, has not been heard of since, and an intensive search which was carried out for him has now been abandoned. The whole countryside where it was thought he might be found has been thoroughly but unsuccessfully combed by search parties.

Several of the minor prizes in the Military Art Union were won by West Coasters, the list being as follow: — £lO each: “Soldier,” Keenan, Woodstock; H. Muir, Hokitika. £5 each: Grey Harbour Board Dunedin; “No. 4,” Kumara; R. Charlton, Boundary Street, Greymouth; “Grannie,” Hokitika”; “Fossicker,” E. Henan, Kumara.

The find of a Mills bomb and a German egg bomb was made by a boy, yesterday, under the Turkish pontoon war trophy which stands in the reserve near the Early Settlers’ Rooms, Dunedin. These were promptly delivered to the police. The Mills bomb is definitely harmless, with the lever release removed, and the egg bomb appeared likewise harihless. How they got there is mysterious. Both will be dumped in the harbour. — Press Assn.

The number of cars in and around Greymouth displaying only one headlight, often on the wrong side, at night, shows no sign of diminishing, and many motorists are apprehensive of the danger which this practice exposes them to. In some cases the failure of a light is unavoidable, and is remedied as soon as noticed, but there are several motorists who are persistent offenders, and are apparently waiting for a fine before doing their duty to other road users.
