BARRYTOWN NOTES
[OUK OWN COIIEESI’ONDENT.] Showery conditions are being experienced with cool temperatures. Gardens for the most part are fairly bare, though in some places the white arum lilies have made their appearance.
The monthly meeting of the Barry-town-Punakaiki Women’s Institute was ’held at tho residence of Mrs Drake. The president, Mrs B. Russell, presided over a good attendance of members, and extended a welcome to the visitors, Mrs Fagerlund (Greymouth) and Mrs Howard. The resignation of Mrs M. Langridge was accepted with regret. The competition for the best supper cloth, which brought forth some fine exhibits, was won by Miss Maureen Wafer, ■ with Mrs Russell second. An interesting demonstration on the making of beaded jug-covers was given by Miss Wafer. It was decided to celebrate tlie sixth birthday of the Institute on the lust Wednesday of August, at the residence of Mrs F. Rond. The- competition for next month was set down as '‘Something new from something old.” A wit-sharpener competition v. hich caused much amusement was won by Mrs T. Richards. During the social hour, afternoon tea was served by the hostesses Mrs and Miss Drake and Mrs Russell. Tho meeting concluded with tho singing of the Institute song.
Speedy progress is being made by the employees of A. and T. Burt witli the election of the dredge, and the riveting of the pontoon is nearing completion. Work is also progressing at White’s Electric Dredge, although operations have- been held up awaiting the arrival of machinery. Messrs J. Ryall and .1. Lewis, who were passengers on Gibbs’ Service ’bus, which suffered mishap on Saturday last, arc both recovering satisfactorily, from minor injuries. A slight improvement is shown, in the condition of Mr Dick Lewis, a resident of the district,■ who has been seriously ill in the Grey Hospital. Mrs Langridge, senr., is an inmate of the. Grey Hospital. Miss A. McGregor, Christchurch, who has been on an extended visit to tlie district, has returned home. Miss Margaret Howell, who has been spending her holidays with relatives in Murchison and Reelton, has returned. Mr and Mrs A. V. Nesbit left on Monday on holiday for the North island.
Mr C. Reynolds, who is an inmate of Oranui Hospital, is progressing satisfactorily. Mrs 1-1. Johns, Miramar, Wellington, is paying a brief visit to the district, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs Ji Ryall.
