Exploding in a sheet of flame and a vast plume of smoke, a gasometer z at Dewsbury, with 1,250,000 cubic feet capacity, blew off the cover, and killed two cousins, Samuel and James Gledhill, whose bodies were discovered among the debris. Herbert Hinchcliffe and .Joseph Rhodes were injured. Rhodes ’ said that he and’ Samuel Gledhill were outside the meterhouse, and James Gledhill was inside. The explosion blew Rhodes for some distance. Hinchcliffe, who was stooping to help him, caught the full blast of fire, and a shower of slates and stones, hut saved his companion’s life.

Doctors, ntp'ses, and the fire brigade were quickly on the spot. The firemen prevented the ignition of an adjacent gasometer, containing 750,000 cubic feet.

The explosion cut off the supply to a portion of Dewsbury, and damaged the surrounding works. The victims' wives lived opposite the works, and saw the explosion.
