RUGBY FOOTBALL

BLAKETOWN v. EXCELSIORS. The match in which Cobden seniors deleated Excelsiors, two weeks ago, was a thriller, and consequently great interest is being taken in the clash at Rugby Park, to-morrow, between Blaketown and Excelsiors. The Hokitika team are leading Blaketown by one point, and a splendid game is expected at the Park to-morrow.

On the No. 2 ground, Kiwis and United, the two bottom teams on the ladder, will meet. Gilbert will be out of the United team through a foot injury. A close game is expected. The principal curtain-raiser at the Park will be between Celtic and United juniors. These teams play fine football.

MAORIS AND S. AFRICANS. WELLINGTON, June 18. An impression has been created that members of the Maori race are not to be selected to play for either the provincial or the international games to be played against the South African Rugby team, which is to visit New Zealand next year. Mr S. S. Dean, chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union’s Management Committee, states that this is not the position. The best teams representative of the playing strength of the unions and of New Zealand would be selected to play against the visitors, and would be picked from both the Pakeha and the Maori players. He

said: There never had been any suggestion that our visitors would not play against Maoris, and it is to be regretted' l that such rumours have been given utterance to. Mr Dean said that the question of whether the South Africans will play a Maori fifteen or a team from the combined universities of New Zealand is a policy matter of the New Zealand Union, and has not so far been considered by the committee. It was hoped to draw up a draft itinerary of the games to be played at an early date. The committee is only waiting definite confirmation of the sailing dates from and to South Africa.
