Rev. Fathers J. Long, Adm., (Greymouth), P. O’Meeghan (Ahaura), J. Finerty and T. Browne (Ross), returned yesterday, from Christchurch.

Passengers by yesterday’s express from Christchurch, included: Mr and Mrs A. Barrow, Mrs N. Mclntyre, Miss W. Perotti (from Wellington), Miss J. Fowler, Messrs R. Thorpy (from Wellington), S. Stewart, W. Judd. G. Davis, and Captain W. Angus.

An official bulletin states that Princess Arthur of Connaught, who underwent a serious operation at a London nursing home nine days ago, has made good progress, and a complete recovery is expected, though convalescence must be long. The Princess, who is 45, is a cousin of King Edward. —Official Wireless.

A Moscow cablegram announced the death of Maxim Gorky (Alexei Maximovitch Pieshkov). He was born at Nijni Novgorod on March 14, 1868. He was successively a painter of ikons, peddler* of kvass, scullery-boy, gardener, watchman, baker’s apprentice, and world-famous novelist.

In honour of the eighty-sixth birthday of Mrs. Eliza Tarrant, a number of Cobden friends were guests at afternoon tea at the Old People's Home yesterday afternoon. The cake was provided by Mrs. Jones. Matron of the Home. Mrs. Tarrant, who enjoys excellent health, was the recipient of numerous gifts and congratulatory messages.
