RUNANGA UNEMPLOYED.
| TO THE EDITOR.] Sir. — I woqld like to reply io "Work’s" letter in last night's ‘‘Star.’’ "Work” says the boys deserved first preference on the 17-Mile job. I fail |to see why they did in view of the 'fact that the single unemployed men 'have not received any relief work for 'all the time they have been out of regular employment. 1 myself have been registered as unemployed for five weeks and have not been granted any relief of any form. The only single men in Runanga receiving relief work are those who are pronounced as unfit, medically, to' enter the camps. On my inquiry, I was informed that admission to camps was possible, only on vacancies occurring. Mr McTaggart says, also in last night’s “Star.” that my allegation regarding single men not receiving relief in Runanga, was wrong. If’that is so, why have I not received relief for the five weeks I have been unemployed. after having been registered the necessary fortnight? I suppose I have not “squealed” enough, but I would like it to be understood that the only point that I. and others in a position similar to mine, are sore about, is the fact that the ordinary unemployed youths (not paying any levy), were granted work first, while the registered unemployed single men (paying the levy and not receiving any relief), have to stand down and wait their turn. Nobody begrudges the youths work, undoubtedly they deserve it: but in view of the previously outlined circumstances it is difficult to understand why they were given first preference for the work. No useful purpose will be served by prolonging this discussion, but I might mention here that 1 have facts and proofs to support my allegations regarding single men (registered) not receiving any relief in the Runanga Borough. 'Thanking you. Sir, for space, and hoping that all secure much-needed employment.—l am. etc., "JUSTICE.”
