WHEAT IMPORTS. AUCKLAND. June la

In spite of the Government’s decision to prohibit the importation ot wheat, a shipment of 4,000 tons, from Australia, was landed by the Kairanga at Auckland on Thursday last. A circular issued by an Auckland merchant, states that this was imported by the Government to supply local mills.

The circular states that it is understood that this wheat would be used by Auckland mills to strengthen the New Zealand flour, which has recently shown weakness. It was stated that the Government had not yet decided to continue to import wheat from Australia.

BURGLAR SURPRISED. WAIPUKURAU. January 16. A daring burglary exploit took place about 2.30 this morning, when a man thought by the night watchmam E. G. The burglar escaped and apparently reached a waiting car. He left an overcoat, chisel and tyre lever, behind in his hurried exit. The criminal or a confederate evidently stole 12 gallons of petrol from F Wells’ garage, after smashing the lock. Entry was attempted at two other shops.

An appeal against the decision of the Registrar of Industrial Unions, in refusing to permit an amendment of the membership rules to allow all workers employed in laundries and dyeing and dry cleaning works, to come under the Christchurch Tailoring Dressmaking and other clothing trade employees’ union, was heard in the Arbitration Court, this morning. The appeal was conducted by Mr. J. Roberts secretary of the union. PRISONERS ESCAPE. AUCKLAND. June 15

Two prisoners escaped from Hautu Prison Camp, near Tokaanu, at dusk to-day. Although a widespread search was made , no trace of them had been reported at a late hour. The men are John Booth Prohl, 26, and Richard De Thierry, 23. a Maori. They left the camp about 5.30, after the men’s tea had been served. Their disappearance was discovered ten minutes later. The escape was comparatively easy, as, under the camp conditions, the surveillance is necessarily restricted. The two men had vanished into the scrub country before any, thing in the nature of a search could be organised. Warders searched the district in cars. HAMILTON, June 16.

John Booth Prohl and Richard de Thierry, who escaped from the Tokaanu prison camp, last evening, and sought shelter at Ngaruawahia in the early hours of this morning, were seen by the Hamilton police, to-day. The escapees were last seen in the township at 8 a.m. to-day. The police search is proceeding.

AUCKLAND RATES. AUCKLAND, June 15Rates totalling 3/llid, an increase of a half-penny on last year, were approved by the City Council, when the annual estimates were submitted by the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis. The increase is due wholly to a higher levy been imposed on the city by the Auckland Hospital Board. A deficit of £71.886 at March 31. 193 c was budgeted for. to offset which there are outstanding rates, most of which are believed to be collectable, amounting to £157,901. Last year ended with a deficit of £65,209, this year’s opening debit being £33,999. , The Council’s overdraft at March 31, ot £79,284, was stated to be the largest for many years. The requests by the departments for appropriations were pruned so severely that in the words of the Mayor, they have been given definite allocations of money, rather than estimated sums, to spend. The Council had issued instructions that the allocations were not to be exceeded, nor were any savings to be expended elsewhere.
