MONTHLY MEETING [OVK OWN COKKESPONItENT. I HOKITIKA, .June 13. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: Mr. G. A. Perry (Mavor), Crs. T. W. Duff, E. L. Park. G. Heinz, A. R. Elcock. A. H. Thompson, E. Techelmann, J. King, H. T. Parry. I Accounts amounting to £226/5/8' were passed for payment. The financial; statement showed: Receipts £633/9/2, i expenditure £767/16/11. Debit Bal-j ance £547/19/6. The Department of Labour forward-1 ed particulars of new scale of pay-i ments for relief workers employed : under Scheme 5, and asking Council’s] co-operation in providing extra assis-j tance to enable all men to be given i employment to the nearest half day above the actual time factor covered by the new scale, and also forward-, ing instructions in regard to time lost through sickness, wot weather, and j other causes. i The Mayor said that the amount, spent in the town on relief work ex- * ceeded by about 60 per cent, the amount of rates received. The town would be faced with a heavy burden j with the new water scheme and hospital works; He moved that the let-] ter be. received and that the Coun-i cil resolve to carry on and to do their ■ best for relief work.—Carried unani-j mously. j Cr. Duff mentioned that a contract | had been let some time ago for electric, lighting the abattoirs, but work had not been done.—lt was decided to | write strongly to those responsible. Chief Inspector of Explosives advised that the Government proposes to introduce legislation providing for the licensing of wholesale and retail sellers of motor spirits, with the general intention of limiting the number of selling outlets on a basis that, is considered economic, and suggesting that all persons who have installed new pumps since April 1, 1936, be notified that it may not be possible for them to obtain a license under the proposed new legislation. Read applied to use the Town Hall for a dance on Saturday, July 25, as the Poultry Club are using the Soldiers’ Hall for their annual show on that night.—Granted. S. G. Newton asked that the road be extended for between two and three chains from the corner of Park and Livingstone Streets to give access to residence which he is erecting.—Granted. Gaylor, Borough Inspector, ■ I applied for increase in salary. —In- ; | crease granted. >| The chairman, Local Government . i Loans Board, forwarded the Loans Board’s sanction, dated April 23, ’1936, to the Hokitika Borough Coun- , cil borrowing the sum of .£lB,OOO by J’a loan to be known as “Water Supply J Loan, 1936,” for the purpose of renewing water supply pipes in 'the . borough and to the reservoir and providing the necessary pumps and pump houses for pumping water from the ' bores into the borough main and reservoir. The abattoirs report stated: —Stock slaughtered during month: 26 cows, 78 bullocks, 27 heifers, 32 calves, 209 sheep, 52 lambs, 11 pigs; condemned, one cow. Fees collected during month, £73/3/-; fees for corresponding month last, year, £BB/1/6. With regard to the foreman’s report on the repairing of the deliber-ately-broken pipe line, he and his assistants were congratulated on the 1 speedy and economical manner in which the repairs were done. It was decided to purchase a typewriter for the Council office. It was decided to hire the County Council grader and carry out work on certain streets.
