(Recd. May 29, Noon.) LONDON, May 2S.

Peters v. R. S. Walker, two up. Tolley v Kvle 2/1, ■ The first surprise’of the day was Wethered’s downfall at the hands the Irishman, Cecil Ewing. Bothdro\e prodigiously, but when one up and five to play, Wethered. developed a disastrous hook, whereas Ewing s long approach play was immaculate. The English champion, Bentley, was two down at the turn against Peters. He putted brilliantly homeward, but the second shot landing in the roadway at the seventeenth, cost Bentley the match.

FERRIER’S MATCHES

Both Ferrier and Timmis played a little wildly in their match. Ferrier turned one up in thirty-seven, his figuies being 5, 4, 5,4, 4,4, 4,3, 4. Timmis took thirty-eighlt. Ferrier was two up at the tenth, but Timmis squared the match at the thirteenth, where he holed a twenty-yarder for a birdie three. Ferrier became dormie two, but at the seventeenth played a wild second, which ball ran through the green and 'across the road and jumped a railway wall. Timmis winning the hole easily. The last hole was halved. The match was not notable for quality. Ferrier’s score in was 4,4, 4,.4, 4,4, 4,7, 4— 39, aggregate 76. Timmis had an aggregate of 75. The Ferrier —Sweeny match attracted a large gallery. The first four holes were halved. Ferrier’s short game was faulty, while Sweeny twice visited the rough. Ferrier won the fifth. Sweeny picking up, after failing to get out of a bunker. Ferrier turned, one up. The scores out were: — Ferrier 4,5, 4,5, 5,4, 4,3, 4; Sweeny 4,5, 4. 5. 7, 4. 4, 3_. 4. Ferrier was too strong with his second shots at the tenth and eleventh, and Sweeny, winning both, took the lead. Ferrier, however, squared the match at the twelfth, with a birdie three, and took the lead again at the thirteenth, when Sweeny was in the rough. The next two were halved. The Australian won the sixteenth, to become dormie two. Then at the dog-leg, the seventeenth, Ferrier, making an effort to cut off a corner, drove into the railway sheds. He teed' afresh, and again landed out of bounds. The third was all right, but Sweeny’s drive was down the and he ran his second shot well up. Ferrier picked up, and would have probably taken nine for the hole. Ferrier hit a colossal tee shot to the eighteenth, outdistancing the American by 40 yards, but Sweeny played a better approach shot, landing three yards from the hole. He sank the putt for a birdie three, squaring the match. The scores in were:—Ferrier 4,4, 3. 4, 5.4. 4,9, 4; Sweeny 4 3,5, 4,5, 4 5, 53. The nineteenth and twentieth were halved with par figures but the Australian won a terrific match at the twenty-first, when he sank a long putt.

Ferrier, to-morrow, will play Dykes ■in the quarter-final, in which there are three Englishmen, three Scots, and one Irishman. Ferrier is the only overseas golfer remaining. The best golf of the day was play'ed by Hector Thomson. Ewing also continues to play in sensational form.

Thomson is now favourite for the title, with Tolley and Ferrier equal as second fancies. Tolley’s colossal driving, to-day, thrilled the spectators. He hit some shots, aided by the wind, for 340 yards. Such mighty hitting has not previously been seen at St. Andrew’s.
