COBDEN NOTES

[OUB OWN CORBESPONDENT.] A number of enthusiasts met in the Cobden Gymnasium on Saturday evening for the purpose of forming a debating society. It was decided to form a society to be known as the Cobden Debating Club, and Tuesday in each week was fixed as the tegular meeting night.lt was also decided to request the Borough Council to allow the Club to meet in the old Town Board office. Arrangements were made to procure copies of the constitutions of other such societies. The matter of affiliating with the West Coast Society was held over. The following officers were elected: —Patron, Mr W/ Kells. President. Mr J. Nelsen. Secretary, Mr R. Quinn. Vicepresidents: Messrs H. R. Bairett, B. Watkin, T. H. Jones, R. Ramage, J. Nimmo, A. Galbraith, A. H. McKane, R. Roper, R. Phillips, M. Minehan, F. W. Baillie, R. Simmers, F. J. Higgins, S. Stewart, and Rev. E. W. Marks. Club captain and treasurer, Mr A. L. Edward. It was reported to-day that the white herons that have made their temporary home in the Cobden Lagoon have a young one to look after. It is hoped that everyone will see that these birds are left unmolested. The Borough Council workmen have completed the tar-sealing of a portion of Bright Street,, and while the preliminary work caused some little inconvenience, the finished work is a very great advance on the original read’. Residents will be pleased to see more streets done in a similar manner, particularly the footpaths in the most used back streets.
