U.S. RURAL RELIEF

BENEFITS FOR THhJ WEALTHY. WASHINGTON, April 8. The curious manner in which some beneficiaries who least required assistance through the benefits paid to farmers under the acreage withdrawal scheme of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration benefited most, was disclosed to Congress when details of payments were divulged. One large wheat farmer in Montana, among the 12 largest beneficiaries under the law, received 50,000 dollars, or approximately seven dollars an acre on land which in the same year he had rented from Indians for between half a dollar to one and a-half dollars an acre. Two large sugar growing companies received benefits amounting to 1,000.OCO dollars each. It was also intimated that well-known Republican politicians who severely criticised the New : Deal, also received substantial sums for the withdrawal of acreage from production. Charges have also been made by Senators that portion of the benefits paid out by the A.A.A. found their way into the Democratic party campaign funds. * One Supiejne Court Judge who voted the A.A.A. unconstitutional, sent back to that agency a cheque for 100 dollars, paid to his farm for compliance with the wheat programmes.
