CANCER INSTITUTION
’AUCKLAND MAYOR’S CRUSADE.
[by cable— press assn— copyright.]
AUCKLAND, May 8. The announcement that he intended shortly seriously to face the question of raising funds in the Auckland Province for an institution to deal exclusively with cancer, was made by the Mayor, Mr Ernest Davis, at the annual meeting of the Auckland Division of the New Zealand Branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society. “I know full well the difficulties of such a scheme,” said Mr Davis, after explaining his intention, “but if it is agreed upon I am prepared to put my shoulder to the wheel and help to carry it out.” Referring to the proposal to raise funds, Mr Davis said: “In the welter of conflicting opinions, I am only too well aware that fools rush in where angels fear to tread, but this does not deter me. I wish to indicate my belief that finance for such a purpose will be forthcoming, providing we set ourselves a definite objective. Our goal must be clear and well defined. People must thoroughly understand the purpose of the appeal, and the application of their contributions, otherwise we might profitably abandon the whole idea.”
MELBOURNE CONFERENCE
(Recd. May 9, 8 a.m.). MELBOURNE, May 8
The final session of the Cancer Conference passed a resolution recommending the Commonwealth Government to appoint a committee to formulate proposals for an Australian Cancer Commission, which should inquire into the treatment of cancer. It also agreed that all hospitals be asked to prepare statistics upon cancer, on a uniform basis, according to classifications to be submitted by a committee; also that the Broadcasting Commission be requested to encourage medical practitioners to take part in the forthcoming campaign against the cancer scourge.
