LONDON, June 8. At the wool sales, 9929 bales were offered, including 6457 New Zealand, and 7529 were sold. There was a fairly good selection,, mainly New Zealand crossbreds. There was keen competition. Australian greasies were firmly held, and consequently there were large withdrawals. Prices generally were steady at the opening decline. New Zealand scoured merinos, Lake Meron, top price 26|d, average 24.1. Greasy crossbred, Morland, top price lljd, average lO&d. ADELAIDE, May 9. A Czech, named Birger, who tried to escape from the steamer Dalcross by leaping from the deck of the ship in mid-ocean, with a hatch-cover for a raft, yesterday burst open the door of the cabin in which he was being held as a prohibited immigrant, and fled, while the ship was lying at Port Adelaide. Birger, who was handcuffed, has not been recaptured. ~ LONDON, May 8. Padgham, with 71/70/70/67, won the Dunlop £l6OO gold tournament, at Southport. He has thus won the last four big professional tournaments, proving, according to the “Daily Mail” that he is the greatest fighting golfer Britain has produced. >
