To-day’s Racing News

Galloping meetings" to come. May 9. —Egmont. May 9—Marlborough. May 9. —Amberley. May 16. —Southland. May 16. —Ashburton. May 16. —Marton. May 16. —Waipa. May 21, 23—South Canterbury. May 23. Carterton. May 23, 25. —Waikato. May 30. —Foxton. RICCARTON NOTES. USEFUL GALLOPS. [special to “star.”] CHRISTCHURCH, 7. A cold wind made matters unpleasant for trackwatchers at Riccarton today, but conditions were favourable for galloping, and some useful work was executed on the No. 1 grass. Chidden, assisted by Sovereign Lady, ran the last seven of nine furlongs in 1.33 4-5. Chidden appears to have gone on the right way since the Easter meeting, and there should be no excuse for her if she suffers another defeat at Amberley. Courtyard and Polygraph covered half a mile along the back stretch in 50 3-5. On the former’s recent track work, he should win some good races during the winter. Universe beat Brevity, with Note Issue tailed off, over half a mile in 54. The last-named failed to move off with the other pair, who were not seriously ridden over the early part of the gallop.

Showing Promise: Cyrillian strode over half a mile in 52 1-5. , She has done well lately, and should give a good account of herself at Amberley. Moonbeam and Impossible strode over half a mile in 1.47 1-5, the second half in 54 3-5. Sea Fox and Dollar Bill reeled off half a mile along the back in 50 2-5. Final Shot beat Rose of Tralee over five furlongs in 1.7, and Colossian and Cape Gabo recorded similar time. Good Work: Cranford broke away well clear of Rebel Chief, commencing a seven furlong task, but the pair raced together over the last ztialf mile. The time was 1.32 2-5, the last half in 55. Rebel Chief’s effort was impressive, as he was several lengths away from his mate over the first three furlongs. Capital ran half a mile along the back in 52 2-5, and Lochain beat Golden Glow over the same ground in 53.

Grand Review strode over seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5, the last half mile in 52 3-5.* H. Turner is to ride her at Amberley.

Gold Coat beat Horotiu and Wharemanea over five furlongs in 1.5 3-5, after giving both a start. Execution covered a mile in 1.47 3-5. She was accepted for in three races at Amberley, but is likely to contest the big event only. Arrow Glen and Frontage ran half a mile in 50 2-5, the former again going well. Useful Miles:

Jolly Beggar, joined by Glenavon at five furlongs, galloped a mile comfortably in 1.49 3-5. Polydora finished in front of Latitude at the end of a similar task in 1.45 2-5, the second half in 53 1-5.

Out for Good: Friday Night has once more failed to stand up to training, and has been definitely retired. He will be given some light stud duty during the coming season.

From Teviotdale: A yearling filly by Philamor from Cymene, dam of, Cylinder, accompanied the Paper Money—Egotism year- / ling filly from Teviotdale to F. D. Jones’s stable this week. She is to be broken in, and sent back until the spring, and her place in the stable will be taken by Kow Tow.

AMBERLEY RACES. PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW. [SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] CHRISTCHURCH, May 8. The annual race meeting ’of the Amberley Racing Club will be held on the Amberley racecourse to-mor-row. Some of the events did not fill well, but the class of horse engaged should ensure interesting racing. The track should be in good order, and the two dividend system will be in use. The programme is as follows: —

11.45: Brackenfield High-weight Handicap, 7 furlongs.—Courtyard 10.13 Execution, Final Shot 10.2, Grand Review, Colossian 9.10, Grampian 9.9, Note Issue 9.3, Rose of Tralee 9.3, Brevity 9.3, Solwit 9.1," Honour’s Lass 9.1, Frontage 9.0. ' s . A strong field will parade for the Brackenfield Highweight Handicap, and the issue appears very open, especially in the face of recent racing and track work. Courtyard has a solid weight, but has only to do his work right to keep the opposition busy at the business end. Grand Review, Final Shot, Brevity, and Honour’s’ Lass are all entitled to consideration. and the favourites may be —

COURTYARD, GRAND REVIEW, FINAL SHOT. 12. 24: Novice Stakes, 5 furlongs.— Radio Star, Twilight Song, Cyrillian, Gay Lyric, Arrow Glen, Polygraph, Lochain, Wharemanea, Royal Cent, Golden Glow. Some smart sprinters will contest the Novice Stakes for non-winners, and a close tussle may be staged. Radio Star, Cyrillian, Gay Lyric and Polygraph have all been credited with impressive work, while Arrow Glen has shaped promisingly in some of his races. Investors may show most confidence in— ARROW GLEN, CYRILLIAN, POLYGRAPH.

1 p.m. Kowai Trot, 3.5 class, 11 miles—Bill Grattan, Bombay Girl, Chieftainess, Dalwood, Dolly Truman, Elite Rey, Frisco Silk, George Brent, Ginger Jack, Hughie Wrack, Irish Aggie Kororo, Loyal Direct, Major Guy, Mont d’Or Native Son, Point Plank, Post Haste, Rebel Girl, Pukeuri, Reymere, Sea Lord, Spey Royal, Queen High, War Bride, Willa, Windsor Lass scr., ’ Mother’s Boy (T.) 12, Hermss 36, King’s Drive 48. In the large field that will contest

the Kowai Trot Handicap, luck in the running will play a big part. The favourites should be — FRISCO SILK, BILL GRATTAN, NATIVE SON.

1.44: Glasnevin Handicap, 7 furlongs.—Polydora 9.0, Rebel Chief 8.13, Courtyard 7.13, Capital 7.11, Grand Review 7.0.

Polydora. is due to make her reappearance in the Glasnevin Handicap, and although she may make a good showing, she will encounter more seasoned opponents in Rebel Chief and Capital, while if Courtyard and Grand Review should appear again, or be reserved, both should add much interest. On form, however, Rebel Chief is likely to be sent out first choice.

2.18 G. B. Starky Memorial, 11 miles. —Chidden 9.3, Latitude 8.13, Execution 8.5, Impossible 7.5. Unfortunately, there were only four acceptors for the day’s principal event, the G. B. Starky Memorial Handicap, but if the quartette parade, they should have a close tussle. Chidden has been given every chance to make amends for her poor race at Easter, but on the form shown at Riccarton, Execution will no doubt be preferred by investors. Latitude won well over this distance at Greymouth, while Impossible has to be given a reasonable chance of taking part in the finish. If reserved, Execution is certain to be favourite.

2.55: Seadown Handicap, 7 furlongs.—Colombo, Execution 8.8, Sovereign Lady 8.4, Swordstick 8.4, Note Issue 7.11, Rose of Tralee 7.11, Brevity 7.9, Honour’s Lass, Universe, Polygraph, Gold Coat, Convivial, Arrownilla, Madge’s Coin 7.7. The Seadown Hack Handicap may provide the best race of the day. ShoiW Swordstick be produced, he will be in most demand, but there is a doubt about his programme. In his absence, the prospects of Sovereign Lady and Colombo appear to be most favourable.

3.28: Amberley Handicap, 9 furlongs —Lady Graceful 9.0, Cranford 8.12, Moonbeam 8.11, Final Shot 8.1. Another poor response was made in the Amberley Handicap, and form over a middle distance would suggest that Moonbeam will be a better favouriU than Cranford.

4.5: Teviotdale Trot, 3.4 class, 11 miles. —Bombay Girl, Capacity, Chaise, Chieftainess, Elite Rey, Frisco Silk, Ginger Jack, Hughie Wrack, Irish Aggie, Kororo, Lord Axworthy, Loyal Direct, Major Guy, Native Son, Point Blank, Post Haste, Pukeuri, Queen High, Rebel Queen, Rollalong, Reymere, Sea Lord, Spey Royal, Willa, George Brent scr., King’s Drive 48. The running of Chaise at 'Ashburton recently, draws attention to his prospects in the Teviotdale Trot, while others entitled to support include Elite Rey, Frisco Silk, Lord Ax.worthy, and Major Guy. The popular fancies should include: CHAISE, LORD AXWORTHY, MAJOR GUY.

EGMONT—FIRST DAY RASOULI—PROSTRATION HAWERA, May 7. The first day of the Egmont R.C. was held in showery weather The track was heavy, but there was a splendid attendance. The totalisator handled £12,1261, an increase of £3,061£. Results: Tangahoe Hurdles, 1J miles —2-2 Contact (Carrol) 1; 6-5 Brigadore (Trillo) 2; 4-3 Ruaform (C. Thompson) 3. Beau Star early was six lengths out from Don Erma, Contact, Ruaform and Glenvane. Contact came up to Beau Star, three lengths clear of Don Erma, Ruaorm and Brigadore. Contact went on to win nicely. Also started: 5-5 Rustem, 3-3 Ngatirahiri, 4-4 Silvanus, 11-11 Meritor, 8-9 Hunting Lad, 9-7 Kentucky Song, 7-8 Glenthawn, 2-2 Red Fox bracketed with Trouvaille, 10-10 Script. Won by a length; four. Time 1.19 3-5. Flammarion was never headed. Trouvaille challenged, but Flammarion won by a length; two lengths to Mustang; Rustem a close fourth.

Flying Handicap, 6 furlongs.—2-2 Gold Mission (Savage) 1; 3-3 Boughal (Mclnally) 2; 5-5 Refresher (Clifford) 3. Also started: 1-1 Limulus, 4-4 Slippery, 6-6 Windscreen. Won by half a length: a head. Time 1.19. In a brilliant finish, Gold Mission won by a neck; Refresher a short head away, and Slippery next. Egmont Steeplechase, about 21 miles.—l-2 Rasouli (Beale) 1; 2-1 Forest Glow (C. Thompson) 2; 3-3 Petrarch (McDonald) 3. Also started: 4-4 Valpeen, 5-6 Ephialtes, 6-5 Copey. Won by five lengths; seven. Time 5.42. A slow pace was set, Valpeen being in front over the stand double from Petrarch, Copey and Rasouli. Ephialtes fell. Into the back the second time Rasouli was within a leng'th of Valpeen, and took charge six furlongs from home, while Forest Glow moved up to second. Rasouli and Forest Glow jumped the last fence together, and Rasouli won by five lengths. Petrarch was seven lengths further back, and Valpeen ten with Copey last. Hack Scurry, 5 furlongs.—6-6 De Trop (Marsh) 1; 4-5 Erebus (Anderson) 2; 5-4 Night Spi (McFarlane) 3. Also started: 3-1 Debut, 910 Dancing Lady, 8-7 Cappy, 2-3 Joviality, 7-8 Wahine Nui, 10-9 Valroy, 14-13 Brioni, 11- Lady Hoariri, 13-14 Lady Briar, 12- Lucrece.

Mcßae Cup, 15 miles. —2-2 Prostration (Wilson) 1; 5-5 Lapel (Savage) 2; 4-4 Tahurangi (Broughton) 3. Also started: 3-3 Onewhetu, 6-7 Peter Jackson, 1-1 Alchemic, 8-6 St. Clara, 7-8 Knockout. Won by a neck, a head. Time 2.16 2-5. Prostration won decisively. St. Clara was was first out, but’ Alchemic went to the front from St. Clara, Tahurangi and Prostration. At the back, Alchemic was in charge from Tahurangi, St. Clara, Prostration and Knockout. Tahurangi ran up on Alchemic at the half mile, both leading from Prostration and Onewhetu, with a gap to St. Clara and the rest. Tahurangi headed Alchemic into the

| straight, with Prostration right up, i and Lapel improving. Prostration joined Tahurangi at the distance, fighting it out, when Lapel joined in. Prostration won by a neck from Lapel. Tahurangi a head back. Alchemic fourth and then came Onewhetu. Tawhiti Handicap, 7 furlongs—2-3 Boomerang (Wilson) 1; 5-5 Leo Colossus (Gladding) 2; 6/4 Hunting Queen (McFarlane) 3. Also staited. 4-5 Orac, 3-2 Royal Feast, 9-9 Corowa 1-1 Le Grand, 7-7 Calshot, 0.0-10 Koreroa, 8-8 Golden Rill. Won by six lengths; one and a-half. Time 1.32 1-5. REEFTON JOCKEY CLUB. At the committee meeting of the Reef ton Jockey Club held on Wednesday evening, Mr C. H. Cleaver piesided until the arrival of the VicePresident, Mr J. B. Auld, who had been attending another meeting. A vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr F. A. G. Archer was passed, the members standing. The late Mr Archer was for some years starter for the Club. The approval of the purchase of 34 ewe sheep was recorded. The Inangahua Ru,gby League SubCentre and the Inangahua Sub-Union applied for the use of the Racecourse for holding matches. —The requests were granted, on the same terms as last year. The Secretary submitted a statement of the receipts and expenditure of the recent autumn meeting, showing a small profit, which was approved. It was decided to forward a letter to the Reefton Trotting Club expressing the appreciation of the Committee for the assistance given by members of that Club at the autumn meeting. Trotting MEETINGS TO COME. 9. —Marlborough R.C. (two trotting events each day). May 9. —Waikato. May 11. —Marlborough. May 16, 18.. —Nelson. May 16.—Southland R.C. (two trotting events). May 30.— Canterbury Park. May 9. —Oamaru. April 30, May 2.—Forbury Park.

Should Pay Her Way: A novice that looked likely to benefit considerably by the experience she would gain from racing at Cambridge was Our Peggy, who paced a sound race into fifth place in the Bruntwood Handicap. She is a sturily built filly by Our Thorpe from Flora Elina, and she can be ticked off as a likely sort to pay her way later on.

Going Affected Him: The most disappointing pacer at Cambridge was Proletarian, who had every chance in both of his engagements, but put no dash into his finishing efforts and was well beaten each time. It was nowhere near the best form of the Frank Worthy horse and evidently he requires a firm track to be seen at his best. It may be a little too early to discard him, as there are few speedier improvers about at present.

A Likely Improver; Among the unplaced division in the Introductory Handicap one that appealed as sure to improve was Great Jewel, who went a fair race without ever appearing a winner. He has settled down a great deal as the result of racing during the past few months, and on Saturday went away fairly well. Now that he is beginning correctly it will not be long before he repays his owner, Mr D. Brideson, for his patience.

Surprise Victory: The biggest surprise of the day at Cambridge, was provided by Dainty Lady when she won the Bruntwood Handicap, as this mare has been off the scene for a couple of years. When half the journey had been covered she was lying in fifth position and gradually .improved, being just in behind the leader, Hori Bingen, as they raced round the turn. From then on she drew right away, scoring by two lengths. Although a shade on the small side, Dainty Lady has a neat style of pacing and will always have to be considered when the class is not over strong. Stopped Over Last Furlong:

As the result of his impressive form early in the season Nervie’s Last was installed a staunch favourite for the Cambridge Winter Handicap last Saturday, but after having every chance was pointlessly beaten into second place by King’s Play. Nervie’s Last was early in the van and was still in this position as they were rounding the home turn, where King’s Play, who trailed him throughout, had too mu,ch stamina. It is just possible that the Takanini-trained gelding was short of a race and maybe he will make amends in the near future.

Will Reach Top Class: Considering it was his first start since coming to the Dominion only six months ago, Swordsman was responsible for an impressive debut when he won the Hautapu Handicap at Cambridge. He quickly struck a gait, and when they had settled down properly along the back he ran up to the leader, Sophy Bingen. Crossing the top he tangled, but lost no ground. He was in charge as the field came into the straight, and, although strongly challenged by Polly Pan, just hung on long enough to win by a neck. Ho is an aristocratic-looking colt and impresses as a trotter likely to reach a high plane.

Novice Shows Promise: One of the most promising improvers seen out at the Cambridge meeting was Hearsay, who paced a rattling good race in the Introductory Handicap in finishing second to Home Brew. It was his first start, bu,t the novice behaved like an experienced pacer. He left the mark smartly and with Stargum was responsible for most of the pace throughout. Hearsay is a four-year-old brown gelding by Peter Bingen from Beatty, a particularly smart mare over short courses some time ago. As he is likely to gain a good deal of benefit from the outing, Hearsay gives indication of being an early winner.

OAMARU T.C. TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME. [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, May 8. The Oamaru Trotting Club will hold its Winter Meeting to-morrow, and with good-sized fields of promising maidens and tried performers ■there is every indication of the fixture proving a big success. This is only in the ordinary course of events for meetings at Oamaru have always been popular with the sports-loving public, and have been loyally support-

ed by owners and trainers. For the convenience of Canterbury sportsn. n a special passenger train will le; re Christchurch at 7.7 a.m. The da.- 's programme is as follows: — 12.15: Innovation Handicap (ti tters), 3.49 class, 15 miles.—Beatrice Bingen, Isis, Lord Ernleigh, Parachute, Parrish Guy, Patty Todd, Swift Guy scr., Guy Hugo 48, Parrish Chimes 96.

The comparatively small field of nine will face the starter in the Innovation Handicap, and remembering Ashburton form, backers will support Guy Hugo on 48yds and Lord Ernleigh on scratch. In his winning effort Guy Hugo and Lord Ernleigh started off the same mark and the difference in the handicap may give the latter a victory. Parachute has speed, although he is not a finished trotter and Patty Todd’s form has been in and out. The favourites should be — LORD ERNLEIGH, GUY HUGO, PARACHUTE. 12.50: Advance Handicap, 3.43 class, 11 miles. —Almont Cling, Donald Dhu, Cusheen, Effie Parrish, Fine Art, Hoyle, Janet Gaynor, Maltravers, Master Garry, Panquitch, Parisienne, Prince Voyage, Royal Doulton, Serene Bingen, Superior Rank, Sylvie’s Best, U Scott scr., Queensbury Wilkes 36. In the Advance Handicap a good deal of interest will be taken in the appearance of the American pacer U Scott, who has yet to win a race, but is a pacer with distinct possibilities. Effie Parrish. Maltravers, Royal Doulton, and Superior Rank will all have their admirers, and the places mav be filled by— MALTRAVERS, U SCOTT, SUPERIOR RANK.

1.25: Stewards’ Handicap, 3.36 class, 11 miles. —Myrna Loy, Casanova, Doubt, Guy Mauritius, Lady Hannah, Moana Tama, Purveyor, Reylena, Royal Palm scr., Carrageen, Lucky Jack, Ma Waro, On Parade, Precious Metal, Red Flush, Royal Crescent, Wee Wrack 12, Monty Chimes 24, Vologda 48.

Speculators will find plenty to exercise their minds in selecting the winner of the Stewards’ Handicap, and betting should be evenly distributed. In recent months good form has been shown by Doubt. Myrna Loy, Carrageen, Lucky Jack, Ma Waro, On Parade, and Precious Metal, and these horses between them would provide a fine race. Red Flush and Purveyor are also above the average. Carrageen would only have to reproduce his Ashburton form to take a hand in the finish while Lucky Jack is one of the most promising horses in commission. In what should prove a very exciting race, the public s fancies may be — LUCKY JACK, CARRAGEEN, RED FLUSH.

2.5: President’s Handicap,. 4.32 class, two miles.—Agile, Bingen Palm, De Soto, Battlefield, Peter Locanda scr., Francis Lincoln, Grace McElwyn, Grand Mogul, Little Nelson 12, Fernbrook Lass 24, Taxpayer 48. The President’s Handicap comprises a handy-sized field of eleven well-performed pacers, and while Grand Mogul failed at Forbury Park in heavy going, he will retain all his admirers for this race. De Soto has raced well over all distances, and will again be a problem,’ while Battlefield is a good stayer and Grace McElwvn as reliable as they are made. Taxpayer may be right back to his best, but the favourites will probably be —

GRAND MOGUL, GRACE McELWYN, DE SOTO.

2.40: Waikaura Handicap (trotters), 3.44 class, 11 miles. —Guy Hugo, Isis, Parrish Guide, Victor Bingen scr., Royal Romance 12, Bon Haven 24, Chudleigh, Parrish Chimes, Tyrone Lass 36, Prince Harvester, Renegade, Sphinx 48, Leeway 84, Helen’s Bay 108. , J Helen’s Bay is a speedy trotter, but she will have her work cut out to give 108 yards to those opposed to her in the Waikaura Handicap. Rc/yal Romance should be improved by her Forbury Park racing, and Tyrone Lass, Prince Harvester, and Renegade would only have to trot solidly to take a hand in the finish. The public’s fancies may include: — ROYAL ROMANCE, RENEGADE, TYRONE LASS.

3.15: Papakaio HandicaH, 2.56 class, one and a-quarter miles.—Blair Athol, Cantata, Doris Derby, Double Great, Lady Antrim, Llewellyn’s Pet, Loretta, Lucky Jack, Olive Rey, Play On, Sea Trail, Vologda scr., Frisco Lady, Golden Mist, Southern Smile, Wild Dreams 12, Greenmantle 24, Stirling Lady 36. Hoises of good even class will contest the Papakaio Handicap,' and special interest will centre in the meeting of high class three-year-olds in Blair Athol, Double Great, Lucky Jack, and Frisco Lady. Older and more experienced horses may have to be reckoned with, and Llewellyn’s Pet, Trireme, Southern Smile, and Stirling Lady are included' in the number. This race will see speculation widely distributed, and the favourites may be — BLAIR ATHOL, FRISCO LADY, TRIREME.

3.50: Enfield Handicap, 2.46 class, 15 miles. —De Soto, Encounter, Fernbrook Lass, Homeward, Little Nelson, Peter Locanda scr., Willow Wave, Francis Lincoln, Llewellyn’s Pride 12, Agile, Bingen Palm, Rey Spec 24. If De Soto is reserved for the Enfield Handicap, he will be well supported although he is asked to meet several high-class pacers. At a difference of 12yds De Soto defeated Willow Wave in the Oxford Handicap at Addington, hut the latter has since won two races over two miles. Llewellyn’s Pride will be racing over his favourite distance, and his great burst of speed will stand him in good stead at the finish. Rey Spec has only to begin smartly to take a hand in the finish, and the final issue may be fought by— LLEWELLYN’S PRIDE, REY SPEC, DE SOTO.

4.25: Electric Handicap (saddle), 2.18 class, 1 mile.—Blondie, Broughshane, Fairhaven, Frank Mac, Lough Guy (T.), Stirling Lady, Symmetry, Vologda, Wild Dreams scr., Admiral Eingen, Admiral Wrack, Happy Knight, King’s Cu,p 12, Eighteen Carat, Radiant Gold 24. With J. Walsh in the saddle, Happy Knight will be one of the favourites for the Electric Handicap, for he has previously proved his ability with the weight up. In Radiant Gold on 24 yards, he will meet a brilliant filly, while Stirling Lady’s recent running

shows her to be above the average. Blondie, Fairhaven, and Wild Dreams will have friends, and the places may be filled by— HAPPY KNIGHT, RADIANT GOLD, STIRLING LADY. WAIKATO TROTS. FIELDS AND PROSPECTS. The Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting will be held at Claudelands tomorrow. The following should race prominently in their respective engagements:— Innovation Handicap: Hearsay, Stargum, Dainty Lady. Flrankton Handicap: Polly Pan, Swordsman, Franz Derby.
