The National Confederation of Labour called a general strike in Madrid, as a protest against yesterday’s shootings. Trams and buses were stopped, and taxis cleared from the streets. The Shopkeepers were compelled to pul up shutters. There are long queues oul side the bakeries, which were permitted to sell bread, this morning. The Government is taking stern measures. Numerous Army officers and Civil Guaras, accused of conspiring with che Fascists, were arrested, including 170 suspected of complicity in the suootings. The Cabinet has declared the Fascist movement to be illegal, and is dismissing the police with Fascist
