To-day’s Racing News

Galloping MEETINGS - TO COME. April 11. —Greymouth. April 11.—Tuapeka County. April 11; 13.—Auckland. April 11, 13.—Feilding. April 11, 13—Wairarapa. April 11, 13, 14.—Riverton. April 13. —Beaumont. April 13. —Waipukurau. Latitude: Latitude was putting in a good finish at Waimate, but it failed to get him closer than a good third. T. Green for Ellerslie: T. Green has been engaged to ride Mr. G. M. Currie’s horses, Entail, Spiral and Moquette, in their engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Ellerslie. Ellerslie Scratchings:

. Mainland was scratched at 2 p.m. yesterday for all engagements at the Ellerslie Easter meeting, and Cappy at 2 p.m., for the Eden Handicap.

Trivet: , Trivet will probably be raced at the Riverton meeting. She was very unlucky in missing a win in the D.J.C. Handicap, and a repetition of that form would make her dangerous in the Riverton Cup. ■

Blazon: The Paladin gelding Blazon, who created a surprise at Waimate when he won the High-weight Handicap, was once regarded as one of the most promising horses at Wingatui. He went right out of form and put no heart into his work. Blazon now shapes as if he might come good again. Attractive Lines:

Silver Sail, who won at Waimate, is bred to go fast,- as she was got* by Paper Money from Tea Kettle, by Tea Tray—Mist, by Absurd—Afterglow, by Demosthenes —Sunglow, by Multiform from Otterden, the dam of Martian and Boniform. Silver Sail had not won a race since she scored in the Irwell Handicap in 1934.

Velocipede’s Double: The three-year-old colt, Velocipede (Rampion—Phyllis Martian), captured the big event at the Whangarei meeting in fine style on both days. On the second day, Velocipede was second into the straight, but once they straightened, up for home, he shot away, and won well from the fastfinishing Bonny Gay.

Jumping Erratic: Lucidus was made a warm favourite for the hurdles at Whangarei on the second day, but ho displayed a tendency to run down his fences and was well beaten into fifth place. The Hiker commenced a strong run five furlongs from home; and taking the lead into the straight led over the last hurdle, but he was unable to withstand the challenge of King Mestor, who finished strongly.

Rebel Star: Carrying penalties for his two victories on the first day, at Westport, Rebel Star was produced twice yesterday, and ran two seconds, going down to Bon Tray and Copyist. He is in great form, and will win more- races, on the circuit.

Consistent Runners: Consummation, with a win and a second, and Needful, with two seconds, raced well at Westport, and should be worth keeping in mind for early engagements. Consummation finished fast on both days, staying on well over seven furlongs.

Copyist: Copyist was not ridden to the best advantage on the first day at Westport, but reproduced his track foim to beat Rebel Star by half a length yesterday. Copyist is well up in the weights, but his brilliancy over six furlongs should see him racing prominently again before the circuit closes.

Reminder: Acceptances' for the Greymouth Jockey Club’s first Easter meeting > close with the secretary, Mr. M. J. Fogarty ,at noon on Thursday. Weights for the Kumara Racing Club’s Jubilee meeting will be ‘declared by 7 p.m. on Saturday next, and acceptances will close on the same night at 9 o’clock. Nominations for the Reefton Jockey Club’s autumn meeting on April 16, close on Thursday next at 9 p.m. Arrowrose: t

The Omoto sprinter, Arrowrose injured herself in her box, and was not raced on Saturday. Produced yesterday, in the six furlong event, she was slow away, but was up with Bon Tray entering thp straight. She failed to run on with it, however, Bon Tray going on to win in fast time. The race will do Arrowrose good', and she should be found playing a prominent part over a shorter course.

Sisterina: Sisterina recorded two good wins at Westport, in three starts. Her unplaced performance was in the principal event yesterday, when she failed to jump oqt. Sisterina is galloping i'eally well, but her barrier manners hlways make her success problematical. Provided she leaves with the field, she should have more success on the circuit, for she has the pace to get a good early position, and stays well.

ILMory Repeated: , Nightform won the Waimate Cup a year ago, and after a blank experii erice in the interval, he re-appeared ch Saturday to repeat his earlier success. On each occasion he was ridden by the Washdyke apprentice E. J. Finn, the Runanga lad, who was at the beginning of his career a year ago, whereas Saturday’s race was his thirtieth win, being the last in which he could claim an allowance. Nightform pulled up after winning as if the race would do him a lot of good, and he may pick up a stake at the Riverton meeting.

Latest Youngster: F. Davis has produced four winning two-year-olds this season, and if Halley races again he should make the fifth before the close of the flat racing proper. This colt had his first race at Pahiatua, and despite being green, he had a seasoned and experienced runner like Silver River doing her best. Halley is a good-looking chestnut by Gainscourt from Parearau, dam nf Pewa and Aroma. Parearau is by Demosthenes from Mangaoroa, by San Fran —Maude, by St. Leger—Hilda, by Musket. A good-actioned and solidlooking customer, he should be a good three-year-old.

•J. Pike: ‘ Sydney’s veteran horseman, James Pike, will ride Peter Pan in his autumn engagements. It is expected that Peter Pan will then be retired, and Pike made an announcement recently that his riding career would come to a close at the same time. Pike came into the limelight as a good rider in the early part of this century but increasing weight, the bug-bear of so many jockeys, curtailed his opportunities in the saddle. He w*on the Victoria Derby on Beverage in 1910 and on Beragom in 1913, while after a lapse of 25 years he started on a winning sequence of form, being on Strephon, Phar Lap, Balloon King, and Johnnie Jason in successive years. Twice he handled the Caulfield Cup winner—Whittier and Gaine Carrington. He tvas associated with many of the victories of Phar Lap, including the Melbourne Cup, while he won plenty of important events in Sydney. In recent years he was able to do comparatively little riding, but his ability in the saddle gave him the choice of good horses. Although he is retiring as a jockey, Pike is not going out of racing. He will apply to the Australian Jockey Club for a trainer’s licence, and doubtless he will soon command plenty of patronage in that department. Death of Hurry On:

Hurry On, unbeaten as a racehorse and famous as a sire, has . been destroyed on account of age 'infirmities at the Lavington Park Stud, Petworth. He was 23.' The late Lord Woolavington bought Hurry On as a yearling for 500gns. Hurry On could not run as a two-year-old owing to unsoundness, but the folowling season he proved to be one of the best of his age by winning all of his six races. These included the substitute for the St. Leger, which was run at Newmarket in the Newmarket. St. Leger, and the Jockey Club Cup. Hurry On did not run again, being retired to the stud in 1918 at a fee of 400 guineas. He was the sire of three Derby winners, Captain Cuttie (1922), Coronach (1926) and Call Boy (1927). He also sired two winners of the Oaks,. Toboggan (1928) and Pennycomequick (1929), two winners of the One Thousand Guineas, Plack (1924) and Cresta Run (1927); and one St. Leger winner, Coronach (1926). Hurry On was the leading sore in 1926, when his progeny credited him with £59,109. His stock had won £304,152 in stakes to the end* cf last flat-racing season. One of his sons in Hunting Song has made a name for himself in New Zealand, and Lord Warden, also by Hurry Oiy is siring winners.

WESTPORT CONCLUDES GOLDEN DART WINS HANDICAP The Westport Jockey Club’s annual autumn meeting concluded yesterday, at Westport, in fine though overcast weather. The track was fast, and there was a good attendance showing an increase on the first day. The totalisator handled £4,664/10/-, as compared with £5,060/10/- on the second day last year, a decrease of £396. For 'the meeting, the investments totalled £8 903?; in comparison with £9,357 last year, a decrease of £453/10/-. Fields were again small, but close finishes and good times contributed to an interesting day’s racing. As on the first day, the despatches of the starter, Mr. G. Reed, were uniformly good. The principal event, the Westport Handicap, was won comfortably by the favourite Golden Dart, who confii med his forward running on the first day Bon Tray and Copyist won the sprints, Rebel Stax, a double winner on the first day, running second to both. S. G. WARE PUT OUT. MELBOURNE, April 6. The trainer, S. G. Ware and the jockey, W. Jenkins, both of Nev Zealand, were to-day disqualified for 12 months for improper practices in connection with the running of Gold Fox in the Epsom Somerville Trial Stakes on Saturday. Gold Fox was also disqualified for 12 months, but the owner G. J. Barton, of New Zealand, was in no way associated with the inquiry. Ware and Jenkins, who have won several races since their arrival in Melbourne, have four days to appeal. .

Trotting MEETINGS TO GOMEL April 11, 13—Hawera T.C. April 11, 15—N.Z. Met. T.C. April 14—Westland T.C. (at Greymouth). April 15.—Rotorua. April 18. —Ashburton. April 18, 22. —Manawatu. April 30, May 2. —Forbury Park. i Improved: On Parade had had a rest of three years, and his victory at Cheviot was in his first time out, since the spell. Under his old trainer, L. Davidson, On Parade (Travis Axworthy-Gitara) has improved a good deal in his gait and deportment. Timaru Cup Winner: Recess, winner of the last Timaru Cup, has trained on well, and is a model of fitness. She should be prominent. at the Easter meetings at Addington, especially over sprint courses, as despite her Timaru Cup win, she is not a genuine stayer.

Recovered: Bay Flier, who has returned from a spell in the country, is being hacked about before being put into light work. He appears to have recovered from the unsoundness, which became apparent at the Greymouth meeting, early this year. Parallax Consistent: Parallax raced consistently at Westport in his four races, running a second, two fourths and a fifth. He was unlucky meeting Red Flyer at th’e top of his form in the mile on the first day, but may make amends. Promising Form: Lady Ann paced a fine race to run fourh in the mile at Westport yesterday, off 48 yards, her only race at the meeting. She was coming fast oyer ti e concluding stages, after being well back early, and she should be an early prospect. Kaitawa: The Reefton-owned Kaitawa, showed abundant speed in his engagements at Westport, as he did at the last meeting at Hutt Park, but was unreliable. He finished fast into second place in his second start yesterday.

Red Flyer: Red Flyer won with such ease over a mile at Westport on Saturday, that he carried nearly half the investments in the second trot, over a mile and a-half yesterday. He raced prominently, but tired badly into third place in the run home. His victory on the first day suggests more early success over a mile.

Son of Bingen Palm: The three-year-old son of Bingen Palm and Mona Logan, Logan Palm fulfilled his first day’s forward running, when he scored a convincing win in the Denniston Trot at Westport, yesterday, recording 2.20 off a 2.27 mark. Logan Palm is a nice pacer, and like his sire is a game racehorse. He hung on well yesterday, in a fighting finish to win nicely, after leading all the way.

Sandy N: The New Brighton trainer, R. Motz, has soiu the trotting gelding, Sandy N to a Christchurch enthusiast, who may dispose of the English-bred horse (by Airman from Belle Rose), to a Perth sportsman. Sandy N was brought to New Zealand by J. Young, who eventually disposed of the gelding to Mr. J. E. Roche, of Westport. Sandy N won several races on the West Coast, and made three successful trips to Canterbury. During last season she was sold to R. Motz who also did very well with the gelding. Sandy N is a reliabel trotter and a good stayer. WESTLAND T.C. RE-HANDICAPS. Re-handicaps for the Westland T.C. meeting are: — Innovation Handicap.—King Author and Logan Palm penalised 24yds, now 24bhd. Aviation Handicap.—Shoelace penalised 24yds., now 24 bhd.
