HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

HOKITIKA, March 14.

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. J. King, T. W. Duff, A. J. Thompson, E. L. Park and G. Heinz. Apologies were made for the absence of Crs. Elcock, Parry, Michel and Teichelmann. The Abattoirs Manager reported stock slaughtered during February as follows: 27 cows, 25 heifers, 63 bullocks, 158 sheep, 176’lambs, 11 pigs, 33 calves; two were condemned. Fees received £7l/16/-, compared with £74 13/- for same period last year. The chairman of the Reserves Committee recommended that the town clock be renovated and lettering attended to. Tenders to bo called for the work. It was resolved that the Cricket Club be allowed the. use of seven acres of the cricket reserve, improvements and grounds to be under the supervision of the Council. A deputation from the Hokitika Harbour Board consisting of the Chairman (Mr. M. H. Houston), Mr. .1. J. Mclntosh and/Mr. E. W. Heenan waited on the Council, concerning- the question of constructing an outlet to the river for water that may Invade the streets during flood time.—lt was decided that a. drain be constructed at the end of Tancred Street, the Council and Board each to meet half the cost, which is estimated- at £BO. The N.Z. Refrigerating Co., advised that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during February: 74 sheep. Westland Hospital Board forwarded table showing sources from which the Board derived its revenue for the past four years. A. Rae and J. Morrison, application for domestic water-service connection. The Hokitika Aero Club, advised that a subscription list had been opened for the benefit of the widow and family of the late Squadron-Lead-er McGregor and inviting the Council to contribute—Resolved that £3/3/be voted. From Messrs Stewart, Johnson, Hough and Campbell, forwarding interest £l9/1/-, W. J. Butler bequest, Cass Square. The joint secretaries, Hokitika Sports Club, asked for permission to hold a' sports meeting on Cass Square on April 15, with authority to charge an admission fee of 1/-. —Granted. J. A. Cuttance, application to erect a hanging verandah at the frontage of Sections 89-and 128, Revell Street. —Granted.

Ken Coles, application to rent Reserve No. 574, and also for permission to fence off un-used part of Hoffmann Street Road Reserve, and giving undertaking to keep road reserve clear of gorse and fences in reasonable state of repair.—Granted. J. Morrison and others wrote asking Council to have a street light installed about the corner of Livingstone and Park Streets, and also to continue the fencing of the drain, as new houses are being erected in front, of the open part of the drain—Resolved that the drain be fenced to Park Street. W. Linklater wrote pointing out unsatisfactory condition of open drain which passes through his paddock and suggesting that the matter of piping the drain receive earnest and early attention. —Resolved that the drain be cleaned out. Messrs A; Detlaff and G. E. Raine, wrote asking that the right-of-way between Sec. 3216 and 3263, which is now fenced off be opened for the use of the public.—Resolved that the right-of-way be kept open. Hokitika Harbour Board notified that it has withdrawn it consent to the use of the river fbreshore at the Tip-Head for a rubbish dump and that legal proceedings will be taken against anyone found depositing rubbish on the foreshore after April 1 next. —Resolved that a- dump be established in Revell Street.

C. W. Evans, Administrator of the estate of Chas Evans, application for lease under Sec. S, sub-section 7 of the Public Bodies Leases Act, 1908, for a term of 21 years from October 12, 1935 at a rental of £l/5/- per year.—Granted.

Miss Rachael Mandi, application for a lease of Municipal Reserve No. 489 under Section 9, sub-section 7 of the Public Bodies Leases Act, 1908, for a term of 21 years from January 1, 1936, at a rental of £4 per annum.—Granted. J. R. Taylor, applied to make a cellar under footpath in Sewell Street, Railway Hotel frontage, approximate size of cellar 4 ft. by 3ft. —Granted, subject to approval cf foreman. The Mayor stated an invitation had been received from the Minister of Internal Affairs to attend a. conference in Wellington concerning the holding of an exhibition to mark the centenary of the Dominion. Owing to unforeseen circumstances he was unable to go and the Councillors also were unable to go. The Mayor stated that Coal Creek bridge, on the Kanieri Lake road, is being replaced with a concrete bridge and the Borough water-pipes crossing the bridge would have to be relaid. It was suggested that the contractor of the bridge (Mr. E. Shirley) do the work, to cost about £lO. This was agreed to by the Council. Cr. Park brought up the question of the incidence of taxation in the Borough. The Mayor said the matter was being looked into. Cr. Park also suggested that ornamental shrubs be planted along some of the streets, particularly Hampden Street.

The Mayor stated the question had been gone into before and it was found inadvisable to plant trees along the streets in a wet climate.
