HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, December 14. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. Jas. King, T. W. Duff, H. L. Michel, E. L. Park, A. J. Thompson, G. Heinz. Apologies for absence were received from Crs. Elcock, Parry, and Teichelmann. Prof. Campbell wrote stating that owing to the rush of work he was unable to complete the report on water works, but hoped to have it ready shortly. A petition from several business people, objected to Weld Street, leading to the beach, being let for games during the Festival, as it constituted a nuisance.:—The protest was received and the Council resolved not to permit games in the right of ways. West Coast Cinemas, Ltd., applied: (1) For temporary license for new picture theatre to open about Boxing Night; (2) Installation of 2in and also a Bin water service connection; (3) For permission to install sanitary conveniences at new theatre to connect to Borough drainage system.— Granted. West Coast Amusements, Ltd., Greymouth, applied for permission to show pictures in Princess Theatre on Christmas night, performance to start at 8.30 p.m.—Regret permission cannot be given, as Christmas looked upon by community as a sacred day. P. R. Whitford, applied for permission to erect a post verandah and balcony over footpath at Mr. .Eastgate’s new premises, Weld Street. —Approved.

The Agent, Public Trust Office, wrote, intimating that Public Trustee is agreeable to convey Sections 3473, 3482, 3577, 3578, Town of Hokitika, to the Council as a gift from the estate of John Roscoe, deceased, if Council will bear the cost of the ' transfer. —On the motion of the Mayor the offer was accepted. The sections are situated on hill back of racecourse. Department of Internal Affairs forwarded copy of Housing Survey Act, 1935, and brief instructions. —Matter be referred to a Committee consisting of Crs. Michel, Park and Duff. Mrs. Annie Boyd wrote pointing out that Council had not yet protected the frontages of her property in Jollie Street, through the street level being lower. —Resolved that P.W. Committee report at next meeting. C. F. Denton, Ross, wrote asking Council to protest against the forming of the Kapitea Road, as it will compete against the railway and the carriage of passengers and goods.—Received. N.Z. Refrigerating Co. advised'' that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika, viz.: October, 1935; 118 sheep, 19 lambs, 1 calf, 2 pigs; November, 1935, 126 sheep, and 13 lambs. The Transport Co-ordination Board forwarded time table and fares, Cook Strait Airways, Ltd., and Union Airways Ltd. Department of Internal Affairs advised amendments to Urban Farm Rating Act and the Rating Act Amendment Act, 1935. Hokitika Fire Board forwarded statement of accounts for year ended March 31. Unemployment Board sent particulars of Christmas bonus and special holiday arrangements for relief workers. —Resolved that the bonus be paid in one payment. F. J. Andrews applied for domestic water service connection to Sections 1540/41, Revell and Spencer Streets. —Approved. Ice cream vendors wrote protesting against ice cream stall on the tank, near Lloyd’s Corner. —Councillors considered that tradespeople conducting business, on rated properties should be protected, and refused permission. Resolved to inform Wirth’s Circus management that Cass Square has been let to the Festival Committee. The* matter was referred to the Mayor and Town Clerk to adjust. Accounts totalling £924/3/7 were passed for payment. Messrs. J. Williams and R. Collett waited on the Council to see if repairs could be made to the cycling track on Cass Square. Mr. Collett thought that £2O would put the track in a satisfactory state. Cr. Duff asked if any revenue would , accrue from the Square if the track ’ was repaired. ( The deputation stated that it was ■ likely that some revenue would be ; obtained. —It was decided to see what - could be done in the matter. !

The abattoirs manager reported: — Stock slaughtered during November: 19 cows, 21 heifers, 72 bullocks, 231 sheep, 17 lambs, 11 pigs, 6 calves, 1 cow condemned. Fees £63/15/G; same period 1934, £6O/3/-. The overseer reported that the av erage depth of water in the reservoir during November was 7ft Gin. It was resolved to erect speed notices at the Borough boundaries. The usual resolutions concerning the fixing of dog registrations were moved and carried; also the resolution relating to the 10 per cent, penalty on unpaid'-rates after March 31. It was resolved that the use of 4in cement pipes as made by the Greymouth Co., be approved for use in the Borough.
