REEFTON NOTES

[our own correspondent.] REEFTON, December 13. The absence of rainfall is being felt in the district and Big River Mine Battery is shut down owing to lack of water. A fall of rain set in about six to-night, and at a late hour was still falling steadily. If the fall is.of any size it will do good as miners and prospectors are all short of water and pasture apd gardens are parched, and growth is backward. ‘ r The Bishop of Nelson is visiting Reefton. Mr W. Monteith is visiting Reefton. , The final community sing of the series conducted, by the Reefton branch of the Labour Party was held on Thursday night, and was well attended. Mrs Archer was at the piano, and Mr McDougall songleader. Items were given by Mr Hugh fgmith recitations, and Mr K. Archer songs. Mouth organ solos, Mr. S. Ferris. The final of the children’s recitation contest was held and the winners were: Girls’ Section, Erin Malloy, first; Ngarie Mercer and Lorraine Honey tied for second place. Boys: Pat Gilroy 1, Denis Manson 2. The prizes were handed to the winners by Mr. C. Chandler who offered congratulations, and thanked all who had competed, Mr. Smith, the donor of the prizes, and especially Mrs. Archer, the accompanist. On behalf of the committee he asked Mrs. Archer to accept a gift. Mrs. Archer was received with musical honours.
