(PRESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT J LONDON, November 11. “The Times’s” Paris correspondent says,: At Marseilles strong protests have been made against the Government’s decision to suppress the Australian service of the Messageries Maritimes liners. A meeting of maritime organisations, attended by the Mayor of Marseilles, passed a resolution asking the Government to reconsider the decision. The speakers emphasised that the saving* expected was more apparent than real, as the layingup charges, unemployment relief, and the loss of special tonnage charges would account for nearly £lOO,OOO a year. The Government were also reminded that the suppression of the line would mean the disappearance of an important commercial link between France and Australia, and would be therefore a great blow to French commercial prestige in that part of the world. In connection with the announcement that the Fredch Governtaient subsidy ,to Messageries Maritimes steamers had been cancelled, and the fears expressed that the line would be stopped altogether, the General Manager of Messageries Maritimes, in Sydney has received information that his directors had decided to continue to maintain the service to Australia. ARGENTINE WHEAT BUENOS AIRES, November 7. The Ministry of Agriculture has estimated that the -wheat production of the Argentine for 1934 will be 6.550,000 metric tons. The surplus from the 1934 crop is 4,192,000 tons. HURRICANE VICTIMS NASSAU (Bahamas), November 8.
