OPERATION ON SINGER (Press Assn.— Copyright) CHICAGO, August 10. Surgeons here to-day removed a goitre from the throat of Madame Galli Curci. While the operation was proceeding, she sang scales, so that it could permit of a study as to how the operation might affect her voice. The goitre had pushed her windpipe an inch and three-quarters to the left. The surgeons believe that the operation will increase her tone volume con siderably. OVERSEAS POPULATION LONDON, August 9. Mr. Rankin, Member of the House of Commons for Kurkdale, Liverpool, in a letter to “The Times.” declares that the Empire's diminishing birthrate is producing a crisis. He contends that the Dominions, in order to convince a critical outside world that they are genuinely filling up their emptv spaces, would be prudent if they doubled their population about overv thirty-five years. * A GROUSE SHOOTING RUGBY. August 9. A feature this year of the usual heavy passenger traffic to Scotland for the “12th” opening the the grouse season, is the increase in numbers travelling by night. One train leaving London, to-night, will run in six parts, and carrv four hundred passengers in first class and 700 in third class sleeping berths, while another train will leave in three parts to accommodate the extra traffic. Large numbers of travellers are taking their motor cars with them in vans coupled to coaches.
