S.L MAIN TRUNK

BLENHEIM, August 8

Mr. E. F. Healy, M.P., sent the following telegram to the Hon. J. Bitchener, Minister for Public Works, today, concerning the South Island Main Trunk railway: “Great surprise and) concern have been caused in Marlborough by the continued wholesale removal of plant, gear, buildings, fencing and other materials from the South Island Main Trunk Line. Feeling is at a high pitch on account of the advertisement calling for tenders for the purchase of three miles of permanent fencing. Marlborough people protest strongly on the grounds that the question of resuming the work of completing the railway is still an open one; and that it is a violation of public policy to proceed with the dispersal of the constructional appliances in a manner implying the total abandonment of this national project. | For myself, I wish to record, as a member of the Government party, the strongest possible protest.”
