MAHARANEE GIVES UP SEAT
HELP TO SICK MAN'S SON. LONDON, June 24. The death of Sir Archibald Birkmyre. the Calcutta jute magnate, in London yesterday, was preceded bv a dramatic incident at the Calcutta aerodrome. The mail ’plane was due to take off for England, and the Maharanee of Cooch Behar was entering the cabin, when Mr. Henry Birkmyre, son of Sir Archibald, hurried up to tire machine with a cablegram announcing the grave illness of his father in England. There was no room left in the ’plane. According to B.U.P. and Exchange reports. Mr. Birkmyro showed the cablegram to the Maharanee and asked her if she would'give up the places booked bv her. and thus allow him and his wife to reach London as soon as possible. Tho Maharanee consented, and within a minute th- machine was on its way to England. Friends in Darjeeling, who had wished her farewell on Saturday, wore surprised to see her suddenly return to-day. She will travel by the air mail leaving next Saturday.
