GOLD AND EXCHANGE. Eby cable —press assn. —copyright.] LONDON, August 2. Gold 140/10, dollar 495 7-16, fraud 74 13-16. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. CHRISTCHURCH, August 2. The potato market which began to show a little life at the beginning of the week has again lapsed into the moribund state in which it was at the end of last week. There appears to be a disincliffation for business, both in town and. country. The Waimarino got away two days ago with a further 7112 sacks, 1662 from the Bluff, 1550 from Titnaru, and 3900 from Lyttelton, so the Auckland market must now be fairly comfortably stocked, about 30,000 sacks having gone north in the last fortnight. Of course, a proportion of the three shipments w’ould be made up of seed, and some went to other ports, but enough went to Auckland to keep the supply there plentiful for a fortnight. Another boat was loading at Timaru yesterday, and is due in Lyttelton to load to-day. As there is no steady demand, the market is erratic and quotations hard to give definitely. Nominal price for Whites on trucks £6/5/- to £6/10/-, Dakotas £7/5/-. Other markets are lifeless particularly the small seeds market, which at this time of the year usually begins to show some signs of : improvement.

A halfpenny increment went on to the price of milling wheat on Thursday. There will be a further increment of Jd next month, but that will be the last.
