HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

SPECIAL MEETING. [OUB OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, August 3. A special meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council wtfs held last evening. Present: Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor), Crs. L. Michel, E. Teichelmann, Jas. King, T. W. Duff, H. T. Parry, A. R. Elcock, G. Heinz and E. Park. The Clerk read a report on loans owing by the Borough, which showed that on July 1, £14,895 was owing for principal. The Clerk read the estimates for the coming year. It was resolved that a brick chimney be put in the sexton’s residence, and that a new range be put in, and that Mr Heinz report on same. The question of the collection of rubbish was raised by Cr. Duff, and after discussion, was held over for future consideration. The water supply question then occupied the attention, of the Council. A report from Dr. Fletcher Telford on the Borough supply was read. This expressed astonishment at the small amount of water coming into the reservoir, and considered the line was either leaking badly or blocked, and also suggested that a search be made for leakage in the reservoir itself. He approved, of the quality and quantity of water from bores made, but insisted that the gravitation supply from Lake Kanleri be kept intact till the bore supply proved absolutely that it was permanent and maintained its quality. He recommended that a Diesel engine stand-by plant be maintained.

The Council went into committee to consider the reports and estimates of installing an electric pumping plant and the maintenance of the old pipe line.

On the Council resuming, Cr. Teichelmann moved and the Mayor seconded, that the Loans Board be written to concerning a loan of £12,000 for a pumping plant and renewing the reticulation of the town. This was carried.

The rates for the ensuing year show an increase of Id in the £. This will make an increase of 2d in two years. The increased levy by the Hospital is the cause of the increase this year.
