DUEL AT AUCKLAND
SWORDS CHOSEN AS WEAPONS. [I‘EB PBESB ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, July 16. A duel with naked swords is reported to have been fought in Auckland last Friday night. The victor in the contest was a former English Army officer, who with his sword nicked the upper arm of his opponent, who thereupon withdraw. The dispute, which led to the duel, arose in an hotel between the Englishman and a stranger, said to be a foreigner, who made a grossly insulting remark about King George. The Englishman told him he would not sully his hands by striking him and challenged him to a duel, which the foreigner readily accepted. The duelling ground was found in a room on the top floor of a city building. Seconds were appointed, and coats and collars having been removed .the light began, duelling swords being used. They fought for several minutes, neither gaining an advantage until the Englishman ran his sword through the fleshy part of his antagonist's arm. Honour being satisfied, the contest so ended. *
