HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening; present: Mr. G. A. Perry (Mayor), Crs. H. Michel, A. R. • Elcock, T. W..Duff, E. Teichelmann', E. Park, E. Heinz, A. J. Thompson, H. Parry. An apology was received for the absence of Cr. King. • N.Z. Refrigerating Co., Ltd., advised that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of May, 1935: 24 sheep. H. A. Thompson, applied for permission to erect a sign across footpath at premises in Gibson’s Quay. J. S.. Stewart, contractor, applied for permission to erect overhanging verandah on the south side of Post Office Hotel, and also between the Railway Hotel and Mr. Turner’s shop.— Granted. ' ■ Dr E Teichelmann wrote offering to pay. for labour if Council will provide material for tar-sealing footpath along his frontage in Jollie’Street.— Borough to find material, .applicant to find the labour. The secretary, Westland Hospital Board, wrote conveying resolution of the Board to make application to local authorities for advance on this year’s levy pending the approval of the estimates, and suggesting that a payment of say, ’£Bs, be now made.— Approved. Mrs. Ethel M. Orr, applied to be granted a lease- Of Lot 15 part Municipal Reserve 492, under Section 8, Sub-section 7 of the public Bodies Leases Act, 1908, for a term of 21 years from June 1, 1935, and also for consent to transfer the lease to Mr. Patrick Purcell.—Granted on usual terms. The resolution referring to the Loans conversion was moved by. the Mayor, and carried. The- treasurer reported receipts amounting to £238/5/-, expenditure £1606 16/3; debit £1069 19/3. Accounts aggregating £496 were passed for payment. ' The foreman’s report, dealing with the work carried out during the month,..was read and approved. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was 3 ft. The Abattoirs report showed stock slaughtered for May: 38 cows, 22 heifers, 67 bullocks, 301 sheep, 110 lambs, 10 pigs, 5 calves; condemned, 2 cows, 1 bullock: Fees received, £BB/1/6, for same period last year £B5/9/6. ; , J, It was resolved that electric lighting be installed at the abattoirs and the slaughterman’s residence. Reports bf the boring for water supply were read, and it was resolved to submit the report to the Health Department together with samples of water. No. 1 bore struck a good supply between 21 and 27 feet, while No. 2 bore struck it at 37 to 40 feet. The Returning Officer (Mr. Coles), submitted a statement of the costs of the recent elections. The roll contained 1,567 names, of whom 63 per cent, voted, the poll costing 3.68 d per vote. The Borough’s share is £44 and the Harbour Board’s £l6/19/6. Cr. Parry raised the question of the number of itinerant traders, roaming the country. Tradespeople in town Were complaining. The Clerk stated much difficulty was experienced’ in obtaining evidence against these people. There were instances of returned soldiers out of work hawking articles, but these men were not interfered with. Reference was also made to the effect of the Hon. Mr. Smith’s optimistic report of the mining on the West Coast Numbers of meh had come to Westland on the strength of Mr. Smith’s report. An undesirable state had been brought about. There was no opening here that the Ministers words might imply. He was i eported to have stated that about l,zoo men on the West Coast were working on the mining subsidy scheme, and were their own bosses. R.S.A. RE-UNION. The annual re-union of the Grey Returned Soldiers’ Association, held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, last evening, was largely attended". Mr A. H. McKane presided. After the loyal toast had been honoured, Mr W. Meldrum proposed the toast of “Fallen Comrades.” Mr T. Crankshaw proposed “The New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association,” and Mr McKane. responded, outlining the aims and activities of the organisation. Mr Meldrum proposed “Sub-Branches of the R.5.A.,” and responses were made by Messrs G. English (Runanga), J. Hunt (Blackball), and Maginess (Brunner). Mr J. Paton proposed “African War Veterans,” and replies were made by Messrs T. Jones, J. Boyes, D. Robertson, and H. Eatwell. Mr T. Jones proposed the toast of the Mayor (Mr Meldrum) and the Deputy-Mayor (Mr McKane), who responded. During the evening, items were given by Messrs J. Braidwood, B. Fenton, Essex, T. Jones. Maginess, Woollett, Baxendale, and P. G, Smith. Mr W. Williams was at the piano. “Auld Lang Syne” concluded the function.
