AUCKLAND APPEAL.

[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.]

AUCKLAND, June 14.

An appeal for an increase of at least five shillings, a week in the grant made* to men on sustenance, and a protest against the new regulation, which requires men to report in addition to the compulsory call at a post office to receive their allowance, are contained in a letter sent by the Auckland Social Workers’ Association to the Minister of Employment. The Association, representing thirty organisations,, points out that its resouorces are almost completely exhausted in its endeavours to help the sustenance men. ,

A GISBORNE DEMAND.

GISBORNE, .'June 14.

A motion that the Government be urged to increase the payment to all relief workers by ten shillings per week was passed at the annual meeting of the Gisborne Relief Committee this afternoon. The mover, Mr C. Goodson, who represented the Unemployed Workers’ Movement, said that the Unemployment. Board had funds,, and could easily afford the extra amount. In seconding the motion Mr D. Coleman, M.P., said that everyone recognised that it was absolutely impossible for the relief workers to exist on the rate paid to-day. The married man without children received 21/per week; if he had two children 26/per week. He had to pay rent; so it was impossible to live on the remainder.
