DEATH AT AGE OF 92

LONDON, April 16.

Dame Sarah Anne Lees, who was frequently referred to as “The grand old lafiy” of Oldham, died yesterday, aged 92. She was the first woman councillor, the first woman Mayor, and the first freeman of Oldham.

During her Mayoralty, in 1910, when 67 years old, she drove an electric tramcar from one end of Oldham to the other, in celebration of the settlement of a tramway strike. She was a. generous supporter .of Oldham Royal Infirmary, to which, she gave £5OO as a birthday gift. On the same occasion she presented 92 pairs of clogs to poor children in the town.-.. Dame Sarah, who was a native oi Mossley, Lancs, went to Oldham 61 years ago, on her marriage to Mr. C. E. Lees, a. local mill-owner, of Werneth Park, Oldham. He died in 1894. A fall she had 18 months ago interrupted public work that was being spiritedly continued in spite of advancing years. •
