U.S.A. DISSENSIONS

SOLDIERS’ BONUS BILL

[BY CABLE —FBXBB ASBN. —COPYBIGHT.]

WASHINGTON, May 23. The Senate, apparently taking to heart President Roosevelt’s yigoious message vetoing the Bonus Bill, sustained hi;; action. Tlie voting was: I'or the Bill 54, against 40. Although a sizeable maj ority of fourteen voted in favour oi fiat money for the veterans, the total (54) was eight short of the two-thirds majority that would be necessary to override the President’s veto. Apparently. at. the last minute, several Democrats decided to stand with the President, much to the surprise and disappointment of the veterans and their spokesmen in Congress. It now seems likely that the radical inflationists have been curbed for tlie duration of the present session.

LABOUR AND N.R.A

NEW YORK, May 24.

Mr William Green, President of the American Federation of Labour, has appealed to Labour to follow the leadership of President Roosevelt. Mr Green struck at the recent statement by ex-President Hoover, who demanded the speedy death of the N.R.A.

"Our Liberal Senators,” shouted Mr Green, “can either follow this discredited loader, and defeat the aims cf Labour, or they can stand with our progressive President, and with the hosts of Labour. Labour holds that the N.R.A. must not. and can not. be either abandoned, or terminated until it has completed its work, and has finished its task, and has returned the millions who still are unemployed back to work. We will refuse to work, and will mobilise our entire economic strength, until we get our rights!” ’ As the crowd roared their approval. Mr Green threatened political retaliation against the members of Congress.
