REEFTON NOTES

REEFTON, May 24.

The newly-appointed headmaster of the Reefton District High School, Mr F. S. Hay, of Murchison, accompanied by Mrs Hay and family, has arrived. Mr E. W. Spencer presided at the regular committee meeting of the Reefton Jockey Club. It was resolved that the club donate the rent of the ground to the Reefton Whippet Club, owing to the non-success of their meeting. A statement of receipts and expenditure of the club’s autumn meeting was tabled. This showed a small credit balance. The New Zealand Racing Conference advised that Mr E. W. Spencer had been elected as representative of the West Coast country clubs to the conference, for two years, and to the District Commitee foi' a like period. A delegation from the Inangahua Trotting Club discussed with the committee the matter of the use of the racecourse for their annual meeting, and it was resolved that the club submit alternative proposals to the Trotting Club. Mr and Mrs Robert Lythgoe are visiting Reefton. On Wednesday evening a Sunday School social,was held in St. Stephens Schoolroom. Items were provided by Mrs Bell, Messrs R. Heslop, P. D. Campbell, Jean Yellowlees, Ruth Yellowlees, and Mr Orsborn. Rev. W. Bell, on behalf of the Sunday School, handed Miss I Kearns, who has been a teacher for some years, a salad set, and wished Miss Kearns in her married life every happiness. A presentation of a rock crystal necklet and eardrops and some pieces of china was made to Mrs Bell, and a cased Loew© pipe to Rev. W, Bell was also made on behalf of the Sunday School. Mr and Mrs Bell are shortly leaving the district, and Sunday School scholars appreciated the five and a-half years’ service of Mr and Mrs Bell on their behalf. Mr Bell thanked all for their gifts. Games were enjoyed and supper served, and the evening closed with the Benediction.

Mr. W. Harris fractured his left arm white at work to-day. He was climbing a ladder when he slipped and fell on the arm. He was brought to town, for medical attention.
