HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING.

HOKITIKA, May 24.

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: Mr G. A. Perry (Mayor), Crs. T. W. Duff, A. R. Elcock, G. Heinz, J. King, H. L. Michel, E. Teichelmann, A. J. Thompson, E. Park, H. T. Parry. The Mayor welcomed the new Council and explained the capital works now in progress; also the work of improving the town’s water supply as commenced by the last council. He mentioned the death of Mr G. Davidson, and expressed sympathy with the bereaved relatives. The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, asked whether by-laws provide a minimum height of Bft. in respect to the height of ceilings in dwelling houses. —Town Clerk to reply. The Sanitary Inspector wrote, reporting a local plumber for carrying out plumbing work which is contrary to the borough by-laws— Plumber to be warned. The Sanitary Inspector forwarded notification to arequire the owner of north part of section 784,' Bealey Street, to carry out certain sanitary | w|orks. —To be attended to by the Town Clerk.

N.Z. Refrigerating Co.', Christchurch, advised that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of April, 1935, viz., nine sheep. The Kanieri Electric Ltd. asked that Borough valve and water supply line at Coal Creek used for draining the pipe- line, be piped so as to prevent erosion.

Kanieri Electric Ltd. applied for permission to erect a duplicate 11,000 volt transmission line between Kanieri and Hokitika as pei’ plan attached.—Granted.

The Chief Inspector of Explosives advised that their Inspector’s report showed that all monies due to the Department had been paid, and forwarding a list of minor matters in regard to petrol pump installations. Maxwell Singer applied to erect a hut on East Town Belt Road Reserve. —Refused.

The Under-Secretary of Department of Internal Affairs notified that under section 11 of the Fire Brigades Amendment Act, 1932. that biennial election of members of Fire Boards is required to bo h'eld in the month of May, and asking for the names of gentlemen elected by this Council— Messrs A. R. Elcock and W. Braddon re-elected.

The Kumara Borough Council wrote asking for particulars in connection with the installation of petrol pumps in this borough.—Referred to the Town Clerk.

R. Herring wrote, asking for domestic water supply pipes to be renewed between water main and his section boundary as supply is very faulty.—Attended to.

O’Brien Bros., Hokitika, applied to instal inside petrol pump in garage in Wharf St. —Approved subject to regulations. H. Lawn, wrote asking for domestic water supply to Pt. Sec. 3300, Park Street, and also that a street crossing be installed.—Approved subject to conditions.

R. W. Palmer, Hokitika, applied for domestic water supply and street crossing at Pt. Sec. 795, Brittan Street. —Approved subject to conditions. 11. Kortegast, in regard to blockage of water meter. —Referred to works committee. The Mayor of Greymouth wrote asking that each of the local bodies on the West Coast send a delegate to a meeting to be held in Greymouth on Tuesday, May 28. with a view to the formation of a Tourist Development Committee. —Cr. Teichelmann appointed. F. Shultze, applied to lease portion of freehold section 1213. owned by the Council. —Declined.

Secretary, Westland Rugby Football Sub-Union, applied for the use of Cass Square for football matches on Saturdays for the current season, and also for the use of the Square on June 3, with the right to charge admission fee of 1/-.

J. L. Turner, wrote suggesting the formation of a good strong committee to improve (’ass Square for picnics etc.

Andrews Bros, and others (five other local butchers) wrote drawing attention io the inadequate lighting at the abattoirs am! asking that an improvcmtiit be effected. —Reserves Committee to inquire.

Hokitika Fire Board advised that the levy for the Fire Board for the current year has been fixed at. C2SS m/-.

District Engineer P.W.D.. advised that the tar-sealing of the highway

is quite a good job :md should stand up reasonably well to traffic, and thai the actual amount of final payment required from the (’otincil is 7/7. —Payment approved.

The Hokitika Harbour Board wrot< in regard to conference regarding de motion of river.—The Mayor. Crs Thompson and Parry appointed dole gates.

The Treasurer's report showed: — Receipts C-157/11/2; Payments L'6sl 11/9: Debit Balance .C;is4/17/6. Tlio Mayor’s report on the King’s

Jubilee celebrations was received, and the grant of £l5/10/- towards expenses was approved. The Abbatoirs report stated: — StOck slaughtered during April.—l 7 heifers, 76 bullocks, 31 cows, 30 calves, 204 sheep, 14 pigs, 185 lambs. Condemned nil. Fees for the month amounted to £B2/12/6. Fees for corresponding month last year £7O/17/-. Repairs at Abbatoirs amounting to £3 were authorised.

Election of Committees resulted: — Abbatoir: Crs King (chairman), Park, Thompson. Public Works: Crs. Duff, Heinz (chairman), King, Parry, Thompson, Michel.

Reserves: Crs King, Park, Perry, Thompson (chairman). Water: Crs Parry (chairman), Duff Elcock, 'Heinz, TeFchelmann, and the Mayor. Rates and By-laws: Crs Michel (chairman), Duff, Elcock, Teichelmann and the Mayor.

Library: Crs Teichelmann (chairman), Park, Michel, Duff, the Mayor and Mr Coles.

Finance: The whole Council. Cr Michel was appointed Deputy Mayor.

High School Board representative:. Cr King. Ordinary meetings of th© Council are to be held monthly, on the second Friday.
