LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS

RESULTS FROM ALL CENTRES

MR. MELDRUM WINS MAYORALTY

HALF-HOLIDAY CHANGE

Throughout New Zealand yesterday, local body elections were held under pleasant weather conditions. Heavy polling took place in all centres. A Greymouth, and in the Grey County, the electors established a record vo e. The interest evinced during the day was manifest again last night. A large crowd assembled at the kreymouth Town Hall, and . despite . the cold, stood for several hours listening o the broadcast of results. Possessors of wireless sets were more comfortable, having no occasion to move from tne home fire. The counting of the votes occupied a considerable time, and although the public had progress reports relayed to, them, and could arrive at a fairly accurate summing up of 'each candidate’s prospects prior to ’the announcement of the final figures, it was a long drawn-out wait. Of the 4,880 electors on the roll, approximately 3,500, or 7-2- per cent, voted. There were five issues on which borough electors had to decide, the principal interest being taken in the Mayoralty, half-holiday, and Hospital Board. The Mayoral contest provided a close 'finish between two new aspirants in Messrs W. Meldrum and F. A. Kitchingham, with Mr F. L. Turley, making his second venture, in. third place. Mr Meldrum was elected, with a majority of 103 over Mr Kitchingham. '

The Returning Officer, Mr F. H. Denton, made his official announcement in regard to the Mayoralty at 9.30 o’clock, and the three candidates then spoke from Station 3ZR.

Mr Meldrum said he could not express how deeply he felt and thankful he was to the people for the great trust they had placed in him by electing him Mayor* of Gresmouth. He was fully aware that the position would entail much work, but he had the time to give to it, and lie would not be afraid of tackling 1 it. He hoped he would be able to carry on the various duties pertaining to the 1 office of Mayor, and live up to the best traditions of the men who had occupied the Mayoral chair in the past. He desired to add that he very much appreciated the fine spirit in'which the contest had been decided, and the clean manner in which his opponents, Messrs Kitchingham and Turley, had fought. Mrs Meldrum had asked him to express her thanks to those people who had voted for him. , Mr Kitchingham expressed his thanks to all who had voted for him, and assisted him during the brief campaign. After twelve years of service on the Council, he naturally felt a tinge of regret at having to leave the Councillors with whom he had been happily associated for so long a period. Mr Meldrum. would have . a good team of councillors to assist him, and thes peaker thought that the nqw Mayor would be able to carry on the affairs of the Council in the right way;. Tll e speaker had the greatest faith in the town of Grey mouth, and he trusted that Mr Meldrum and his councillors would lead it tQ further progress. Mr Turley said he was pleased to know that just' on 700 people had seen fit to vote for him in the contest for the Mayoralty. When a person went to a ballot he knew that someone had to be at the bottom of the poll. It would have been nice to have been at the top, but he felt sure that the work of the Borough Council would go on just as well as in the past. Mr Meldrum w*as a man of experience, and the speaker was sure that he would make a capable Mayor. Mr Meldrum certainly had a lot of time at his disposal, and he would be in a position to give a great deal of that time to considering the wants of the people. If he did as well as Mr Greenslade the people would have no cause for regret over electing him. If well, and still living in Greymouth, at the next local body elections, the speaker would again be a candidate for the Mayoralty. The result of the contest for the Borough Council was not known until after midnight. With one exception, all the candidates returned thanks to the electors from Station 3ZR. The seven former councillors who stood were re-elected, with one exception, the new councillors being Messrs. G. R. Harker, A. M. Carroll, and 1 A. 11. Paterson. The position of DeputyMayor was won by Mr. A. H. McKane. The half-holiday question was decided in favour of Saturday, and the Minister of Labour will be notified of the result of the poll. He will there-

upon appoint a date on which the statutory closing date will operate, being not later than three months after the gazetting of the day so appointed. The contests for the Grey Hospital Board and the Grey Electric Power Board were closely fought out. In the Hospital Board, two former borough representatives, Mrs. K. O’Brien and Mr? J. Kyle met defeat, the new members being Messrs A. H. McKane and F. F. Bonstridge. Mr. A. Mosley headed the poll, the other two former members returned being Messrs F. L. Turley and J. B. Kent. . One of the Grey County Council representatives on the former Board, Mr A. Donnellan, met defeat by Mr. A. Robinson, of Te Kinga, and the extra member, as representative .of Brunner, is Mr. J. Smeaton. The personnel of the Board now is: Messrs R. McTaggart (Runanga), J. Smeaton (Brunner), A. Mosley, F. L. Turley, A. H. McKane, F. F. Boustridge, J. B. Kent (Greymouth), A. Robinson, J. Mulcare, and H. G. Carter (Grey County). In the Power Board contest, Mr. H. G. Carter was replaced as a County representative by Mr. A. Robinson. Another former member, Mr. H. Duggan, was defeated at Runanga, by Mr. J. Unwin. As Greymouth representatives, Messrs W. H. Parfitt, J. B. Kent and F. L. Turley were returned, and the position vacated by Mr. J. W. Greenslade was secured by Mr. A. H. McKane.

Outside Greymouth, the district polling brought few surprises? The former members of the Grey County Council were returned, five of them, Councillors J. W. Hannan, W. Ogilvie, G. Blair, J. Ryall, and A. McDonnell being unopposed. >

The Mayoral contest at Brunnbr was decided in favour of the. sitting Mayor, Mr. J. Smeaton, who was also re-elected-to the-Grey Power Board, and won a seat on the Hospital Board. The successful Candidates for. the Borough Council were members of the old Council. At Runanga, Mr. R. McT’aggart was re-elected Mayor, and retained his seat on the Hospital Board. In speaking to electors from Station 3ZR, Mr. McTaggart, said he particularly desired to thank the people of Runanga for again electing him as their Mayor. He was also gratified at being again elected to the Hospital Board, of which he is Chairman. Along with others, he added, he had done his best for the hospital, through a period of transformation, and he would continue to work faithfully in its interests.- Irrespective of the. controversy that had taken place at the hospital,. he felt sure that the public had confidence in the Board, and its administrative officers. He hoped that the new members would pull together, work in harmony, and not take notice of outside interests. For the Runanga Borough Council election, two former councillors were returned.

in the Buller electorate, the sitting Mayor, Mr. J. Kilkenny, had a big. victory, .and the new members of the Council are Messrs M. O’Dea, J. Bird, and C. H. Thomas. The former Hospital Board members were all returned.. - .

There was a slight change in the Inangahua County Council. Mr., H. Hamer was re-elected as Mayor of Kumara, and nearly all the former Councillors were returned. • At Hokitika, Mr. G. A. Perry was not opposed for the Mayoral office, and Mr. H. L. Michel was returned as; DeputyMayor, with several new aspirants also successful. Mr. H. T. Parry headed the poll for the Westland Hospital Board, and in the Westland County Council, the only new member is Mr. Brown, who defeated the sitting member, Mr. Searle, for the Southern Riding. Results in details are:—

POLICE ACTION. AUCKLAND, May S. The vigilance exercised by a large number of detectives and uniformed officers during the progress of voting in the municipal elections, resulted in the taking of names of persons who were distributing printed cards, beai'ixig the names of candidates. While police officials said subsequently that thev could not reveal whether any prosecutions "were contemplated. it was admitted that the purpose of the action at the booths was to emphasise the law regarding interference with electors, at. ox* on theix* way to the booths. The activity of the police was disconcerting to many of those who were requested to supply theix* names. It was apparent that very few were acquainted with .the law in question. The provision states that every person is liable to a fine not exceeding £26, who, at an electioxx, in anv way interferes with any elector, either In the polling booth, or oxx his way there, with the intention.of influencing him, ox* advising him as to his vote.

It was stated by the police that reports from various officers would have to be awaited before any estimate of the number of names taken could be made.
