To-day’s Racing News

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME April 29—Avondale. KEEN RACING AT OMOTO. FIVE FAVOURITES WIN. Fine and warm weather was enjoyed by patrons at the Omoto racecourse yesterday, which marked tne opening of the . Greymouth Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. The course was in splendid order, following rain earlier in the week. It provided good going. Fields were large, and tne standard of racing and riding was high. The attendance was satisiactory, and the public were well on the mark on the selection of winners. Five first-favourites scored, while another filled second place, all in the six galloping events. The two trotting races were won by second and seventh favourites. . . The . meeting was admirably controlled by the President (Mr T. E. Coates), the Secretary (Mr M. J. Fogarty), and other officials. A programme by the Greymouth Civic Band added enjoyment to the afternoons sport. Mr J. Noble, handicapper, had the satisfaction of witnessing close finishes, with the fields bunched over the final stage. Mr R. Hatch effected excellent dispatches with fields that had the. usual number of fractious candidates to cause bother. The races were run well to scheduled starting times.

The chief race, the Hannan Memorial Handicap, yjras annexed by the much improved and locally owned and trained four-year-old mare, Sisterina. This race provided an excellent finish between Sisterina and the favourite, Quietly. Mr A. M. Carroll, of Kettle Bros., Ltd., agents for Jas. Buchanan and Co., Ltd.j who had donated an expensive set of cutlery for the winner of the race, made the presentation to the owner of Sisterina, Mr J. Leonard. The totalisator turnover was £312 10/ less than on the corresponding day last year, yesterday’s figures being £3740J as against £.4053. Results additional to those in last evening’s “Star” were as follow: —

KAIATA HANDICAP TROT, of £7O, 3.5 class, one mile and a-quarter: 7 Mr. J. P. McNeill’s gr.m. LIL GUY (Real Guy—Phosphorous mare), 6 years, scr. (owner) 1 3 Mr. D. A. Times: 2.57 3-5, 2.57 4-5, 2.55. Winner trained by L. A. McNeill, Lauriston. Tote £437J. Lil Guy moved away smartly, and driven patiently was never in danger of being defeated. Forest Maiden and Lough Erne broke up at the start, momentarily steadying the others. Lil Guy secured a break, followed by Arctic Voyage, and the two gained a useful lead on the remainder. When four furlongs had been covered the order was Lil Guy, Arctic Voyage, Beverley King, Atarau King and Glitter, and going down the back Atarau King made a run into second place, but Lil Guy was under a steady pull, and led by a length into the straight. Glitter then came through and also Boltaire. They ran Lil Guy to a neck, but she could have won in easier fashion. Glitter was second, a length in front of Boltaire, with a neck back to Forest Maiden. Then came Atarau King and Arctic Voyage.

Bon Tray made a one-horse race of the Flying Handicap, jumping out smartly and leading all the way. Arrowrose was always in second place. Delice was in third position early, followed by Arena. Delice tired in the straight and Arena secured third place, with Elgindale next, then Lady Nan and Arrowmid. OTIRA HANDICAP, of £7O, seven furlongs: — 1 — WINO, Hunter and Webb’s b.g., Cockpit—lnoe, 4 yrs. 8.5 (L. J. Ellis) .. .. 1 2— ROYAL GALLANT, D Ilosking’s blk. g., 6 yrs., 7.8, (A. Wino had a length advantage from Collosian going down the back with Gallant, Giggleswick and Pharaoh closely following. At the entrance to the straight Wino led Royal Gallant and Giggleswick. Wino won comfortably from Royal Gallant with Gigjgleswick a fair third, then came close up Colbssian. Next to finish were Little Doubt and Pharoah.

NOTES ON THE RACING. Made the Meeting: The standard of riding at the Omoto meeting yesterday was high-class. It made the racing decidedly interesting, and gave confidence to bettors. Weight Told: Quietly was the main selection for the Hannan Memorial Handicap, but she failed, after putting up a grand fight, to concede Sisterina 331bs. An Arrowsmith Stayer: Renowned for their sprinting ability, Arrowsmith stock'have - one of their number in Sisterina who is a genuine stayer over a distance. She is going to prove a most useful galloper, for she is endowed with speed, . stamina and courage. Rode a Good Race: E. J. Pinn rode a good race on Sisterina. ’ He jumped her out smartly, kept h-ar in second place till the far turn for home, where he sent her along to turn first for home. He had to stall off a challenge by L. J. Ellis on Quietly, and had he not used all his vigorous energy he would have had to be content with second place. He sits a horse well, shows good judgment, and is awake to make the most of every useful opportunity. A most promising lightweight, Pinn is with the right man, E. S. Ellis, to make a big success of his calling. t

A Gay Deceiver: Courtyard does everything right on the training track, but seldom gives of his best with the colours up. He put no effort into his' race yesterda v although looking a picture of fitness. He beat only Heather Glow home, after the latter had failed to see out the mile and a

Did it Easily: Although Rioyal Sceptre prevailed only by a head over Animated yesterday, he was not . fully tested in the race/ His rider had a strong rein on him Until he reached the straight. Royal Sceptre responded to the loosened bridle, and came home with a telling finish. Met a Fast One:

Arrowrose went a particularly good race yesterday, but met one too fast for her in Bon Tray. The latter is a four-year-old of decided ability, and will reach select class in sprinting events.

Did Not Show Up: i Bella Rosa ran a disappointing race. For a mar© of her calibre it was surprising to see her effortless display. She could finish only in fifth place in a six-horse field. That form was not right, after her Westport and Kumara efforts.

Under a Handicap: Pharoah was not the horse he showed himself to be at Kumara. He contracted a cold and has been off his feed. It was not surprising therefore, that he lacked stamina in yesterday’s race. He is not himself. A Game Finisher:

It is unfortunate fbr the owners of Earthquake that she loses ground at tho start. Had she got away with the others yesterday, the Metropolitan Handicap would have been easy for her. She is a game finisher, but usually gives too great a start to the ethers, to win races.

Will Win Again: Latitude, a five-year-old by PolazelSiinilitude, is a fine looking galloper, and on his showing yesterday is as good as he looks. He made no race of it in the Novice Stakes, and will not be long in winning again. Turn About Due:

Coalpit put plenty of heart into hetwork yesterday, and this daughter of Cockpit— Gold Bound is about due to win her first race. Animated Still:

Although aged 10 years, Animated can yet beat more than beat her. She is in good heart, and is always willing to give of her best. It took a welltrained one in Royal Sceptre to rob her of another win yesterday. Before the circuit concludes Animated should add to her good Coast record.

Much Improved: Wino won the last race yesterday in easy style. He was always in front, and galloping freely, won well. He is a much improved horse, and although it has taken him some time to come to hand* he is now solid, and should win in his turn.

Had Every Chance: Colossian had every chance to win yesterday, but the best he could do was to get fourth. He has earned a reputation, but of late he has not lived up to it. A big horse, he should carry weight better than he has, and on the face of his performances, he is only a moderate. Ran Well: Golden Dart carried 101 b overweight yesterday to secure the services of L. J. Ellis, and that told in the finish. Golden Dart Is a fair sort, but the field yesterday was the best he has met. He will win again, but not out of his turn. SYDNEY YEARLING SALES SYDNEY, April 26. At the concluding day of the yearling sales, D. Macintosh, of Melbourne paid six hundred guineas for a shapely chestnut filly by Heroic from Belle Gallant. Percy Miller, of Kia Oro Stud, Scone, offered nine colts and ten fillies by Baralong (imported), also eight fillies by Pantheon (imported). The complete draft realised 3,860 guineas. The New Zealander, G. Barton, secured a Baralong colt from Wilhelmina for 180 guineas. Peter Pan’s half-brother, an attractive colt by Brazen, from Alwina, was passed in at eight hundred guineas. H. Couzens. of Melbourne, bought a beautiful bay colt by Spearhead from The Amazon, for 350 guineas. A large draft of Silvius fillies, made from fifty to 160 guineas. The great improvement in racing in the past twelve months has been reflected in higher prices and spirited bidding at this year’s sales. Increased prize money has brought back to the racing fold many sportsmen whose colours were prominent several years ago. Their presence at the sales was relished by the breeders, and made for greater competition than has prevailed for some years.
