The first lighthouse to shine over flic sands of the Sahara Desert was inaugurated to-day. The event is announced iu a brief message from mid Sahara, stating ‘hat. "the lighthouse at Eldon Cinq is working as from to-day.”
Bidon Cinq, the loneliest outpost of a. lonely land, is in the heart of Tanezrouft (the Land of Fear), And sists of a wheelless railway carriage for the accommodation of passengers travelling by the Trans-Saharan Company’.''. service, a petrol dump, and one nt live attendant.
In view of th * importance of the rou.r- to air traffic, the company has installed this nenen't in the midst of a. region which i-> utterly waterless and where losing the way means death —Peutor.
