To-day’s Racing News

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME April 15 —Westport. April 20—Tuapeka. April 20, 22—Wairarapa. April 20, 22—Feilding. April 20, 22—Auckland. April 20, 22, 23—Riverton. April 22 —Beaumont. April 22—Waipukurau. April 22 —Kumara. April 22, 23— Canterbury. April 24, 27.—Greymouth. April 27 —Marton. April 27, 29—Avondale. Another Attempt: Another attempt will be made to train Merry Peel, who has rejoined E. J. Ellis’s stable at Washdyke. Possible Trip for Membos Membo may make a trip to Australia. A good stayer and jumper, he might make good in an Australian campaign if not over-weighted. Cuddle:

Cuddle is engaged at Riccarton,’ Feilding, and Wairarapa. Few are fond of tackling hard tasks when a comparatively easy one can be found to reproduce satisfactory results, so that Cuddle may be missing at Riccarton.

Resting: Queen of Song has been turned out of training, and will be treated to a spell. Earlier in the season she displayed promising work on the track, but did not race up to expectations.

A Beneficial Spell: Spiral is reported to be greatly improved in appearance as the result of a spell. He will be placed in training again during the next few weeks. Spiral was third to Vintage and Cuddle in the Wellington Cup.

Pronounce It Vol-tree: Keith Voitre’s name has been pronounced all sorts of ways—Voi-ter, Voi-tray, Voit. He himself says it’s Voi-tree.

Illuminate Destroyed: Illuminate was destroyed on Tuesday after veterinary examination. It was subsequently found that besides breaking a smlal bone in the fetlock the lower part of the fetlock joint had split in half.

Likely for Riverton: Panocha has been schooling well at Riverton. This mare’s pace on the flat will make her dangerous in the hack steeplechases at Riverton if she can jump the country.

Plenty of Steeplechasers: There does not appear to be any dearth of steeplechasers about this autumn, and the prospects of good fields during the approaching jumping season are brignt. Inv Club has received an acceptance of fourteen for the Great Western Steeplechase, and a dozen for the hack steeplechase. Jonathan:

Mrs S. L. Parsons, owner of Jonathan, states that the son of Thespian appears to be throwing off the trouble from which he suffered last spring. Galloping about the paddocks he appears to move freely, and hopes are entertained that this brilliant customer may again be seen on the race track.

Embarrassed with Riches? Golden King is engaged at both Riverton and Riccarton. He could run in the Riverton Cup and travel north to race at Riccarton. At certain periods on the calendar New Zealand owners are embarrassed with a richness of opportunity, and the fact is particularly obvious at the Easter fixtures.

A Brilliant Fencer: The brilliant jumper Arcade has broken down, and hence his absence from the Riverton acceptances. Arcade could carry a field along and allow no loitering on the journey, and it is to be hoped that the trouble is not serious. He is one of the few that hurdles a fence.

Quality-Looking Gelding: Mr A. Chisholm, of Otautau, has sold the three-year-old gelding by Woodend from Glentruin to Mr JMacGregor, who races Steeton. me brother to Lochlaggan is well grown and is a quality-looking chestnut. He has gone into T. E. Pankhurst s stable.

A Coining ’Chaser: Parasang figures amongst the acceptors for both the Waiau Steeplechase and the Great Western Steeplechase. He would start a short-priced chance in the Waiau Steeplechase and a well-backed one in the chief event.

Curie Hurdling: . Curie has been given a trial oxer the hurdles at Napier Park, and it is considered there is every prospect that he will prove proficient in tins department. In 1930 his trainer. W. McKinnon, took King’s Jest, when only a novice, to Ellerslie, to win the Great Northern Hurdles, and possibly he will set Curie a similar task.

Won » Year Ago: The Smuggler, who will carry topweight in the Riverton Cup, has not won a race since he captured the Great Auutmn a year ago, but he has not done a great deal of racing in the interval, and was in retirement for several months after the New Zealand Cup meeting.

First of Season Winners: Trueshaft’s win at Pahiatua was his first since he scored in a hurdle race at Napier Park last winter. Other first of the season winners on the day were Vinio, Raparahara, Sweet Music and Taumau.

Navaho and Bonnie Vale: With the recent sale of Saltpot and Stroller, the Wellington owner, Mr B. L. Hammond has now only Navaho and Bonnie Vale to carry his colours, but these two horses are well and will be racAjg again at Easter at Tauherenlkau, where they have enjoyed marked success in the past. Indeed, Navaho has won at the course every time he has been there, and that is five meetings in succession.

“Black and White” Trophy: Messrs Kettle Bros.,' Ltd., West Coast agents for Black and White Whisky, have received a handsome trophy, a canteen of cutlery, which is to be presented on behalf of their principals. James Buchanan and Co.-, Ltd., to the winner of the Hannan Memorial Handicap, which will be run at the Omoto course on Wednes-

day, April 24. This trophy, which is a fine specimen of the silversmith’s art, will be on view in Kim Williams' window, and is quite worthy of inspection by all sports and others interested in racing.

A Likely Colt: Haut Monde, who won at Pahiatua, showed good form in the early part of the season. He developed a dry cough, and had to be spelled, but seems to be back to form or returning to it. In the spring Haut Monde won at Woodville and Trentham. He followed with a third to Legatee and Galilee in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, and occupied the same position to Galilee and Variant in the Royal Stakes. Haut Monde is a chestnut colt by Lord Quex from d’Oro, a sister to Desert Gold. He is engaged at the Auckland Easter meeting. Imported Stallion:

The stallion Foxbridge, purchased by Mr L. O. Otway, of Pukekura (Cambridge) arrived at Wellington this week. A good-looking horse, standing 16 hands, he is by the Ascot Gold Cup winner Foxlaw, from Bridgemoupt, dam of the One Thousand Guineas winner Cresta Run. He is by Bridge of Earn from Mountain Mint, by Spearmint from Adula, a sister to Pretty Polly. Foxbridge was purchased by Mr J. V. Rank at the December sale in England in 1934 for £2500. He won the Atlantic Cup of £2500 at Liverpool, and finished third in the Eclipse Stakes to Loamingdale and Firdaussi. He has several other good performances to his credit, and it is hoped Mr Otway will have a worthy successor to Gay Shield.

Guard for Journal: While Journal, a hot favourite for the Sydney Cup, rests at night he is closely watched by an armed guard and a savage dog. Owner-trainer J. T. Cush of Kogarah, engaged Mr M. Downing as Journal’s guardian and permission has been granted by the police for Downing to carry a gun. Downing will occupy an empty stable near' Journal’s box, and Cush has had installed an electric light which can be flashed on to the Cup favourite’s stall at a second's notice. “There is no possible chance of any person attempting to interfere with Journal,” said Cush, “as Downing served at the war with me, and I know him to be an excellent shot.” Even though the Sydney Cup is not run till Easter Monday, Journal is already carrying hundreds of public money. Cush feels he is doing the public a great service in engaging a guard so early.

Improvement in Stakes: It is a reassuring sign of the gradual return of prosperity to note the steady restoration of cuts in prizemoney by the Canterbury Jockey Club. Last season showed an improvement of £lBlO on the previous year, and the total for this season reveals a further gain of £l9/5. The stakes improvement in detail is:—

Totals £18,325 £20,135 £22,110 The stake-offering for the present season is naturally still a long way short of the peak years, but the restoration of £3785 in two years at least shows that the sport is at present on a sounder footing than it was a couple of seasons ago.
