HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

HOKITIKA, March 30.

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present, The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. Jas. King, T. W. Duff, Dr. Teichelmann, J. Cuttance, A. C. Armstrong, A. J t Thompson, G. Heinz. An apology received for the absence of Cr. Elcbck.

Annual leave was granted to the Borough Inspector, arrangements to be made for a substitute.

J. Schroder wrote complaining of state of footpath in Sewell* Street. — Referred to works committee to be attended to.

Attention to drainage at junction of Stafford and Fitzherbert Streets, was also left to the overseer to attend to.

Mrs. E. Haddock made application for domestic water supply to residenceStafford Street. —Approved. Westland Cool Storage and Dairy Co., enquired re supply of water by meter. —Held over.

N.Z. Alpine and Rock Garden Society, wrote asking whether Council has suitable situations for two rare alpine plants.—Offer accepted. N.Z. Govt. Railways wrote advising that Department had adopted the agreement made between the Government and the Wellington City Council, in respect of rates on Crown properties occupied by weekly, monthly, or quarterly tenants. A. R. Elcock, applied for consent to plan of subdivision of Section Pt. 854, and Section 855. —Approved. The Treasurer reported receipts amounting to £4BB/1/7, payments £832/13/7. Credit balance £54/1/3.

Accounts amounting to £289/6/3 were passed for payment.Tenders for 80 loads of pit gravel for Hoffmann Street were received from Messrs Coyle and O’Brien Bros. Both being the same price (2/-), lots were drawn and Coyle being the lucky one, his tender was accepted. It was resolved to renew the kerbing in Revell Street near Cameron’s stables, and to continue the street pipes from Sewell to Tudor Street, one foot pipes to be used for which moulds for casting them are to be procured.

It was resolved to replace some old wooden water supply pipes in Hampden Street, with cement-lined steel pipes. The Mayor remarked that the Council would abandon wooden pipes altogether. Cr. Duff, referring to the tar.seaL ing of Fitzherbert and Stafford Streets (part of the main highway) said some disappointmeht is being felt. It was thought that, the tar-sealing would end the dust nuisance, but it is as bad as ever. Cars are grinding up the loose grit on the road. The road has a rough surface and to him It did not j appear to be a good job. He moved ■ that the P.W. Engineer be asked to report on the matter. This was carried unanimously.
