NATIVE BUSH FOR BOROUGH

DONATED BY MR G. R. COTTLE.

An area of ten and a-half acres of land, covered by native bush, and donated to the Borough of Greymouth, by Mi- G. R. Cottle, was yesterday inspected by members of the Reserves and Town Planning Committee of the Borough Council. There were present, Crs. F. A. Kitchingham, F. F. Boustridge, J. B. Kent, F. B. Lawn, A. H. McKane, ’ A. McCarthy, and the Borough Engineer, Mr A. J. Fairmaid.

The area is situated in a valley at the south end of the town, and is approachable from Marlborough Street. It offers itself as an ideal park, for the bush is in virgin state, with king ferns abounding.

Mr Cottle has offered to the Council, a strip of land a chain in width, and passing through his property, which would provide easy access to the bush. The land surrounding was milled several years since, by Messrs Stratford and Blair, ..and has been cleared. It is a little-known spot to the public of Greymouth, but should access be made easy to it, there is all the beauty of native bush to vest it with popularity. From the hills a complete view of Greymouth is obtained, and the councillors-spent some little time yesterday in admiration of the view unrolled before them. One councillor drew attention to the air mail making a perfect landing on the aerodrome site, but the others agreed it wa s asea-gull, From the hills however, Greymouth presented itself as a well set-up, and tidy town, having many fine residences.

Further consideration to the matter will be given by the Council, and the question of access decided. The commendable public spirit shown by Mr Cottle, an ex-councillor, is fully appreciated by councillors, and every effort will be made to place the area at the disposal of the public, as early as possible.
