April 27, 29 —Avondale. Below Form:

Red Manfred lost a lot of his admirers by his poor display last weekend. He did not fail on the score of condition, and it would seem that his hard campaign in the spring has left its effects. ' ■"«- Valuable Brood Mare:

The brood mare Lady Marie has, in successive seasons established a remarkable record, for she has thrown in those seasons Gay Sheila, Gay Blonde and Gay 'Sheik.

Showed Stamina: Sunee’s convincing win in the Champion Hack Cup makes it plain that it is over a distance of ground that he is going to show his best form. Sunee belongs to a great staying Australian family which contains St. Leger winners, and there now appear excellent prospects for his future.

Gay Blonde Under Offer: Gay Blonde is under firm offer to an Australian buyer and there is every chance that the sale will be completed. The price is 3000 gns. The sale „ is being negotiated, through the agency of Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd.

Won Like a Good One: Th’e solid style in which Gay Sheik won the North Island Challenge Stakes indicates that he will be hard to beat in the remaining classic races for those of his own age this autumn. It is also- a good indication that he should train on for three-year-old honours. He is one of the most likely Derby colts of the season.

Failed to Go On: r • , „ x . Entering the straight in the Hutt Handicap at Trentham, Miss Hushabye just as in the Douro Cup in January, appeared to have the race at her mercy, but she was stopping quickly over the last furlong. Conditions were in her favour, so far as the going was concerned.

Should Stay a Distance: Pladie won at Trentham like a good horse. He has always shown speed and he appears to have become solid with age. On-the way he finished at the end. of the race.on Monday he will not be troubled by a jour-

Lost Nothing: Vintage lots nothing by missing the A.J.C. meeting. In the Sydney Cup he was given 9.5,-51b, above Topical, who gave him a stone and a beating at Flemington. Considering the gelding allowance, he is rated as better than Hall Mark, ,who conceded 21b. and ran him to a neck in the Essenden Stakes.

Not Wanted: . Clubs all over the Dominion have been dropping hurdle races* on the plea that they attract small fields and are consequently unprofitable. Forty years ago three runners was about the average at country meetings, and there was no thought of dropping the events. On one occasion at Washdyke there was only one “starter”, Romulus, who had a walk over!

Comes of Age To-day: The Awapuni Gold Cup, which gives class to the Manawatu autumn meet-, ing, comes of age to-day, having been first run in 1915. The earliest winner. was Chortle, a great weight- * carrier who was better at a mile than at any longer distance, but the small and turning track at Awapuni favours crack milers, and assisted Autopay and Silver Ring in the last two years. Desert Gold won the Cup three times in succession, and Sasanof and Nightmarch won it twice. Other good horses to win ware Amythas, Rapine, BaLymena, Thespian, Commendation, Star Stranger and Rapier. Of lesser distinction were Suggestion, Vertigern, and Marqueteur, though the last-named defeated a good one in Amythas. The Awapuni Gup was one race that Gloaming never tackled, R. J. Mason having cut out the Manawatu meetings after the Biplane rumpus in 191 S. OAMARU—FIRST DAY. TRIVET WINS STEWARDS’. OAMARU, March 21. The autumn meeting of the Oamaru Jockey Club opened in dull weather, the attendance figures showing a decrease. The track was fast. The Club reverted to the single pool system, the tote on the 75-25 per cent, basis handling £6,5684, compared with £7,306& last year. A Promising Pacer: Nobleman is a five-year-old horse by Native King from Princess Ann, tho dam of Gamble, and judged by his three performances this season and the class of horse he has defeated, he should do his owner several more favours.

Lindbergh: Has been in solid work for five weeks, and he is in better physical order than when ho last sported silk. He is being got ready for the principal sprint races at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Easter. v

Has Disappointed: in his last few starts Lucky Love has not finished with his usual dash, and the black gelding has been a trifle disappointing. He. was given a let up after the February meeting, and the short spell appears to have benefited him. He will have another opportunity in the Franklin Handicap at Epsom to-morrow, and the gelding would only have to produce his best form to have great prospects of success.

A Consistent Performer: Bingen Chief has been racing fairly consistently of late, and he will have another opportunity of extending his winning record to-morrow at Epsom, as he claims an engagement in both the Fergusson and Papatoetoe Handicaps. He is reported to be in good order at Cambridge, and as he can both sprint and stay his prospects look bright. A Likely Improver: When Derby Fame competed in the Waiheke Handicap on the first day of the recent Auckland meeting it was his first race for a considerable

time. He was always prominent in the running, and it was only, in the last furlong that his condition gave out and he began to tire. He is engaged in the Devonport Handicap tomorrow, and would only have to begin smartly to take a lot of beating, as the distance, one mile and a-quar-ter, should suit him admirably.

Well Placed: A horse that reads well for Epsom on Saturday is Rare Rey in the Franklin Handicap. He won Well at the February meeting, although undoubtedly a little lucky to beat Star Pronto, who broke when the had the race won. However, Rare Rey finished on very determinedly, and never wilted when hard driven over the last half mile. On that occasion he conceded the limit horse 36yds, but will now compete off the front.

Promising Novice: Azure holds two engagements tomorrow in the Devonport and March Handicaps respectively, but is giving away time in the latter event. The three-year-old is a very level-headed pacer, and she would only have to repeat her Christmas performance to take all sorts of beating in the Devonport Handicap. Returned to Work:

Mataunga has been on the easy list for the past two months but he is now back in work. *

Few Classes to Suit: Norman Fox has been in work for some time now, hut he has not done a great deal of racing. There are few classes to suit him and he has not been the success his early form indicated, failing to race as well on grass tracks as he works at headquarters.

Better Every Day: Indianapolis maintained an even gait over two miles at Addington yesterday morning. His first mile took 2.19 4-5, and the full distance 4.40. He looks better each day. Rollo Resumes:

Little has been seen of Rollo for some time but he has resumed work to be prepared for racing next month.

Princess Onyx: Princess Onyx will probably have her next race at the Manawatu meeting. She has filled out -well and her course should be plain sailing from now on.

Proletarian Spelling: •An Auckand exchange reports that the three-year-od Proletarian is at present enjoying a spell in the paddock and it may be some time before he _is again asked to race. This fellow shaped like one who would meast ure up to the best of his age, but while he has been responsible for some brilliant track work he has failed to get out of the maiden classes.

Private Track Opened: C. K. Yeatman is opening a private track at Prebbleton. At the moment he has a team of four in Silver Letitia, Fdrest Maiden, Treasure Bond and a half-sister to Fifa. Golden Dollar is being used as a utility horse. Yeatman’s present team has yet to be developed but it is understood that later he may take over one of our best trotters.
